Wolves could repeat Craig Dawson trick amid uncertainty over Jonny Castro Otto

Wolves are likely to be bidding farewell to Jonny Castro Otto in January – meaning there may well be a need to replace the Spaniard.

The 29-year-old was recently banished from the first-team by the club following a training ground incident, with the details of said incident being made public on Tuesday evening.

It is claimed that Jonny threw an elbow at Wolves youngster Tawanda Chirewa, spat at a coach and broke equipment.

Sporting director Matt Hobbs has said that the player has apologised for his behaviour.

But realistically, it is really difficult to see how he will remain a Wolves beyond the January window.

It has already been reported Wolves could move for a replacement if he is offloaded – and one wonders if the club might make a fresh attempt to sign Aaron Cresswell

It has been reported this week that Wolves could dip into the transfer market if Jonny leaves.

One player the club looked at in the summer was Aaron Cresswell, whose contract at West Ham United expires at the end of the season.

Cresswell was being considered by Wolves as a potentially inexpensive signing.

In the end though, nothing materialised with Wolves unable to reach an agreement with West Ham. Apparently, Cresswell had actually tried to force a move as well.

So it was disappointment for Wolves then, but perhaps now there could be a fresh opportunity.

Wolves are in a better financial position now, and Cresswell’s contract has wound down further.

Maybe West Ham would be more open to letting the £50,000-a-week star go, especially since he has hardly played this season, making just five appearances.

A year ago, West Ham sold Craig Dawson to Wolves and the club may well hope that a similar deal can be done with Cresswell. The evidence is there that Wolves are happy to go back in for a player they have previously held interest in.

Gary O’Neil may well fancy repeating the trick of signing a player with huge experience from West Ham, in a deal that would not break the bank.

Cresswell cannot really play on both sides of the defence like Jonny can, but he can play left-back, left wing-back or as a left-sided central defender. If he signed, you would imagine Matt Doherty would no longer be an option on the left.

There is some good versatility there with Cresswell, and also plenty of Premier League experience. He’s described by West Ham as ‘reliable and committed’ and what’s more, Cresswell also puts a very good ball into the box, either from the wing or from set-piece scenarios.

If Jonny is sold as expected, then this may well be a player to keep an eye out for.
