Wolves could make history against Newcastle United for the wrong reasons

There is a lot on the line as Wolves face Newcastle on Saturday afternoon, including a long-standing record the Old Gold have.

Vitor Pereira will be desperate to put points on the board sooner rather than later, and the trip to St. James’ Park is the next opportunity to do so.

Newcastle are a strong side, but the Toon have yet to win a game this season, leaving them just two points above Wolves.

When Wolves make the trip up north, getting a result will no doubt be at the forefront of the players’ and the manager’s minds, and doing so would prevent losing an impressive record, and setting an unwanted one.

Wolves have never lost opening four league games in 127 years

Records are meant to be broken, but Wolves will want to avoid losing one against Newcastle on Saturday.

In their 127-year history of being in the English Football League, First Division, and Premier League, the Old Gold have never lost their opening four matches.

Three defeats against Manchester City, Bournemouth and Everton have left Wolves susceptible to ending this 127-year run, as well as making it the first time they have lost the opening four games.

There is definitely a real danger of losing this record on Saturday as Newcastle have solved their striker issues with the arrival of Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.

Roy Keane expects the Old Gold to score, but the Irishman still predicted Wolves to lose, and other pundits have said the same.

The expectation from the footballing world is that Newcastle will pick up all three points, and Wolves’ history at St. James’ Park points to that as well.

Wolves’ record at St. James’ Park does not bode well for their chances

Wolves have won just one game in their last 22 matches at St. James’ Park in the English top flight.

Their record in the other fixtures is seven draws and 14 losses.

The last time the Old Gold travelled up to Newcastle and came away with a win was in 2018 under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Matt Doherty’s late winner sealed all three points for Wolves on the day.

Additionally, Eddie Howe’s record vs Wolves certainly points toward another disappointing result for Vitor Pereira.

However, underdog stories do happen in football, but Wolves are going to need to work incredibly hard to avoid defeat on Saturday.
