Wolves boss Gary O’Neil can make ‘smart’ move for ‘magic’ Premier League striker

Gary O’Neil has now been told to target a move for one Premier League striker in the summer transfer window.

In January, Wolves made numerous attempts to sign a striker but were unsuccessful as Gary O’Neil was made to settle with what he already had.

That hasn’t proven to be the worst outcome with the Molineux side now pushing for a spot in Europe following four wins in their last five matches, including a 1-0 victory over Brighton to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals.

O’Neil’s side achieved that win without star striker Matheus Cunha, who is making encouraging progress following a ‘significant’ hamstring injury with the Brazilian now back on grass.

Sadly, fellow forward Hwang Hee-Chan suffered an injury against the Seagulls and has not been the same player since returning from Asia Cup duty with South Korea.

It is clear that Wolves need to target a new striker in the summer transfer window, and journalist Liam Keen thinks the club would be ‘smart’ to go for Luton Town’s Elijah Adebayo.

Wolves told to make ‘smart’ move for Elijah Adebayo

Adebayo is enjoying a fruitful debut season in the Premier League having plundered nine goals in 23 matches, seven of which have come in his last nine.

The 26-year-old is one of the most in-form strikers in the division and he has played a crucial role in the Hatters’ fight for survival, but there is still a major possibility that they could be relegated.

Rob Edwards’ side are four points from safety with a game in hand and could make an immediate return to the Championship.

With their top-flight position in peril, Keen was asked on the E&S Wolves Podcast whether Wolves should make a move for Adebayo and he responded: “I love this question because as you know Elijah Adebayo is my guy. I was covering Walsall while he was at Walsall, covered his fall, his rise and his move to Luton, lovely lad, good player.

“I think the type of player he is would suit what Wolves want to do, however, I think Luton would try to keep hold of him and want a decent fee so it’s not the easiest deal to do but I think it would be a smart one.”

Adebayo would be a good signing

In the system Wolves play, O’Neil needs his striker to boast incredible athleticism, ability in the air and willingness to make runs in behind.

During his time at Luton, Adebayo has combined those attributes with his deadly finishing to form a strong partnership with Carlton Morris.

When Luton were promoted, questions were raised about whether their strikers could adapt, but Adebayo has proven he belongs in the top flight after producing regular “magic”.

As highlighted by FBref, he ranks in the top 6% of Premier League strikers for non-penalty goals and top 8% for the percentage of aerials won.

Wolves won’t likely have any big budget to spend in this window, so if Luton do go down, they could capitalise by purchasing the London-born striker for a cut price.
