Goncalo Guedes will reportedly undergo another operation on his knee.
The Wolves attacker is currently on loan at Benfica, and the Portuguese giants have said today that the 26-year-old will have surgery for a cartilage injury in the left knee.
A statement read: “The forward requires surgical treatment, to be carried out in the coming days.”
It will mean that Guedes will miss the game between Benfica and Santa Clara this Saturday.
That is a shame, because it is the final game of the season with Benfica standing to win the league title. Currently, they are just two points ahead of Porto.
Since they have a pretty superior goal difference, a draw will do for Benfica if Porto beat Vitoria SC.
It is frustration for Guedes, who has already seen his stint at Benfica interrupted once through injury.
Back in March, he actually had knee surgery again, causing him to miss around a month.
So far, Guedes has made just 13 appearances for Benfica. He started well, but he was then sidelined as he recovered from his first surgery.
Since returning for Roger Schmidt’s side, he has just been getting mere cameos.
The move has not worked out as Wolves had hoped.
Guedes really disappointed for Wolves when he was at Molineux, and Julen Lopetegui stated in January that the player didn’t want to be at the club.
Wanderers sanctioned a loan move to Benfica, perhaps in the hope that he would find form and keep his value relatively high.
But having featured so little, Wolves are now potentially looking at taking a real hit on Guedes this summer.
Goncalo Guedes loan spell with Benfica has frustratingly not worked out, as player prepares for second keen surgery
So Guedes’ season is now done, with a second surgery on his knee imminent.
Hopefully he will recover well and there won’t be any lasting issues for him.
The move to Benfica just hasn’t worked out and Wolves are now looking at selling the player for much less than the £27.5 million they paid Valencia last summer.
He surely won’t be sticking around at Molineux. given everything that was written about him.
It is just not ideal at all.
Because Wolves are now said to be having concerns about FFP.
Had Guedes’ loan spell at Benfica gone well, then perhaps his sale could have been really helpful this summer.
But it’s hard to see Wolves getting anything more than about half what they paid.
