Wolves at risk of 123-year English football low when they face Liverpool

Wolves’ run of Premier League games without a win has left them in danger of hitting record lows in English football history.

It has been 17 matches without picking up three points in a game, and with reigning Premier League champions Liverpool next, there is a real possibility it could extend to 18.

For Rob Edwards, he could match Mick McCarthy’s run of seven games without a win, who remains the only Premier League manager to do so.

And now, a record which has stood for 123 years could be matched when Wolves travel to Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Are there any current Wolves players capable of doing something like this?

The idea of a team going 18 games without a win seems unfathomable, and until this season, it quite frankly was.

The prospect of going so long without a win is almost inconceivable in the modern game. Teams are stronger, preparations are more advanced, and marginal gains are becoming more and more important.

However, this Wolves side continues to defy expectations negatively, and they are beginning to look likely to break Derby’s points record.

According to BBC Sport, the last side who went 18 games winless from the opening day of the season was Bolton Wanderers 123 years ago in the 1902/1903 season.

Now, remarkably, Wolves find themselves on the cusp of achieving that same 18-game winless streak if they fail to pick up three points in a tricky tie against Liverpool.

In that year, Bolton in fact went the opening 22 games without a win, and it would not be a shock to see Wolves break that too.

However, that is not the only record on the line, as Rob Edwards’ side could match another unwanted statistic.

Additionally, with defeat on Saturday, no other side in English football history will have accumulated fewer points than Wolves after 18 games.

They would join Newport County in that unwanted record, with the South Wales side picking up just two points in the 1970/71 season while in England’s fourth tier.

Rob Edwards will be looking to inspire a similar performance as shown against Arsenal just weeks prior. The Old Gold could have come away with a result, but misfortune with two own goals sent them home without any points.

Wolves will be without captain Toti Gomes when they face the Reds, and with Emmanuel Agbadou at AFCON, that is a huge blow.
