Wolves are making a behind-the-scenes change that has the potential to be really positive

What this season has proved is that things at Wolves need to change.

The club have been competitive in the top flight since gaining promotion in 2018, but the wheels have begun to fall off in recent times.

Wolves have sold too much and recruited poorly in the last few seasons, and now Rob Edwards has been tasked with correcting course.

But his isn’t the only appointment Fosun have made. Matt Jackson has been made Wolves technical director, meaning a shakeup to the current chain of command — one that is expected to yield positive results.

A brave call from Fosun?

Liam Keen explains the potential benefit of Wolves shakeup

Wolves correspondent Liam Keen recently discussed the news that has come out of Molineux this week.

Fans are skeptical about the Jackson appointment, questioning the decision to hire from within rather than bring in a fresh mind.

But Keen has a different view, and one that paints the hire in a more positive light.

On the E&S Wolves Podcast, he explains: “The head of scouting, head of recruitment, Ben Wrigglesworth is the man that heads that, would be given a bit more responsibility.

“He’s got a big responsibility anyway, but I think being involved in that process, having a team with him and Matt Jackson, Rob Edwards being heavily involved, giving this team a bit of power, really, if you will, to go and improve and make the right decisions for Wolves, provided that is what happens.

“Obviously, I know Jeff makes the final decisions, but giving these guys power to go out and make the right decisions with players, it has the potential to be a positive thing.”

Keen reckons Jackson coming into this role will put more power in the hands of Ben Wrigglesworth and Elliot Sutcliffe, ‘highly thought of’ members of the recruitment team.

There is, however, a problem.

Recruitment has been a weak area at Wolves

Keen’s theory is that giving the recruitment team a larger role can lead to better decisions on new signings, but the track record in recent seasons suggests otherwise.

Those who have come in this season have — for the most part — failed ti make an impression.

Jackson says the new signings just need time to adapt to the Premier League, but that excuse is quickly running out of juice.

Jeff Shi on Wolves’ summer transfer window business

“I think it is a good window. The key purpose of the window is to help the coach. We tried to base the squad on Vitor Pereira’s view. Of course we didn’t achieve 100% of the signings we wanted, but I think we are 90% there.”

Maybe this restructuring will pay off, but it feels like deja vu from the summer.
