Wolves approached another Portuguese manager before Vitor Pereira, he’s just taken over Champions League giants

Wolves fans are hoping that Vitor Pereira will prove to be an inspired appointment.

It’s been a great start for Pereira since he replaced Gary O’Neil a couple of weeks ago.

He has taken seven points from his first three games, and the team look much more organised and the players look together. Pereira actually became only the fourth Wolves manager to go unbeaten in his first three top-flight games, so he couldn’t really have had a better start.

Pereira has a huge job on his hands to get Wolves well away from the relegation zone though.

Undoubtedly, there will be bumps in the round. But so far, Pereira is looking to be a pretty good appointment, as he’s picked up points and said all the right things.

But seemingly, he wasn’t Wolves’ first-choice, with one outlet claiming that another Portuguese manager was approached by the club before him.

It’s been suggested by Gazzetta dello Sport that Wolves actually approached Sergio Conceicao to be their next manager after they sacked Gary O’Neil.

Conceicao is someone the club have considered a few times previously to take over at Molineux. But it was also claimed last month Conceicao was leaning towards West Ham United.

In the end though, the former FC Porto head coach declined the opportunity, and ‘kept himself free’ for another club. But that club wasn’t West Ham.

And in the last few days, that club – AC Milan parted ways with their manager – Paulo Fonseca – to create an opening for Conceicao.

Conceicao is now tasked with getting the Italian giants back on track in Serie A, and guiding them to the knockout stages of the Champions League – currently, they are 12th and just one point off automatic qualification places.

Wolves will be happy with Pereira appointment

It is probably common knowledge at this point that Periera wasn’t really Wolves’ top choice to replace O’Neil.

For a few weeks before O’Neil’s sacking, there were claims that Wolves had wanted to appoint someone with a bit more Premier League experienced, like Graham Potter or David Moyes.

But neither fancied the gig.

It’s interesting to hear that an approach was made for Conceicao, a man who won eight trophies at Porto, including three league titles.

But Wolves can be fairly happy with their appointment of Pereira and how he’s done so far.

He’s said all the right things and the players seem to have bought into him immediately. If Wolves can indeed back Pereira with two new defensive recruits in January, then hopefully he’ll successfully keep the club in the Premier League.
