Wolves’ ace Matheus Cunha makes Jamie Carragher’s Premier League Team of the Season ahead of PFA award winner

Wolves supporters have been disappointed with their side’s performances throughout this campaign but delighted with the form of Matheus Cunha.

Cunha has been Wolves’ best player of 2024 without a shadow of a doubt. The 25-year-old hauled 12 Premier League goals in 2023/24, and has since reached even greater heights.

The Brazilian forward has plundered 10 goals and supplied four assists in 19 appearances this term, continuing his excellent form under Vitor Pereira.

Cunha is now the Premier League’s biggest overperformer, surpassing his expected goal haul by 6.02 while being the Old Gold’s creative force in the final third.

As such, the Wolves No.10 has earned huge recognition from fans and pundits alike, with Jamie Carragher now handing him a brilliant plaudit.

Jamie Carragher names Matheus Cunha in Premier League Team of the Season

There’s no doubt that Cunha, who signed they signed from Atletico Madrid for £44m two years ago, holds the key to Premier League survival.

A return of 14 goal involvements puts the forward ahead of several names for goals and assists in the top flight, including Chris Wood (12), Ollie Watkins (12), and Nicolas Jackson (12).

He’s also produced some extraordinary moments, most notably on Boxing Day when Cunha scored directly from a corner against Manchester United.

The Brazilian superstar is capable of serving up the spectacular, which is why it’s no surprise to see the striker get named in Carragher’s Premier League Team of the Season so far.

Cunha was named in the starting lineup alongside some special names, with Mohamed Salah, Cole Palmer and Wood making up the attacking quartet.

Perhaps more impressively, the Wolves man was placed in the team ahead of PFA Player of the Year holder Erling Haaland and Newcastle marksman Alexander Isak.

Wolves stance on Cunha in the January transfer window

Heading into the January transfer window, supporters will fear the idea of their star forward exiting the club midway through the season.

Luckily, Wolves have no plans on selling Cunha in January, regardless of the offer, and are also prepared to offer him a new contract.

This is in an attempt to bump up his asking price further as Arsenal are long-term admirers of Cunha, with clubs aiming to strike while the iron is hot.

With speculation over his future building, Cunha did say Wolves feels like his home in a recent interview, suggesting a club would need to place an unbelievable offer to land him – with Champions League football perhaps a non-negotiable.

That being said, while an exit in the winter doesn’t look on the cards, the former Atletico Madrid player looks destined to leave in the summer.

Cunha, who is currently serving a two-match ban for violent conduct, will have earned his opportunity to play at the very top and hopefully, the fee Wolves receive justifies his incredible talent.
