Why Wolves must now reignite interest in former £33m transfer target this month

Gary O’Neil is looking to bolster his Wolves squad with a new striker this month – and he could surely do worse than to sign Michy Batshuayi.

Wanderers have started the season really well, after most people tipped them to struggle after losing a host of big names, including Julen Lopetegui just days before the new campaign.

But O’Neil has come in and surprised many people, with Wolves currently sitting 11th in the table with 28 points.

As a result of this start, Wolves don’t really need to be doing too much this month, especially with there still being a need to be cautious around Profit and Sustainability rules.

But we know O’Neil wants a new striker, with the loan exits of Sasa Kalajdzic and Fabio Silva now increasing that need.

A few names have been suggested this month, such as Danny Ings and Hugo Ekitike, but perhaps Wolves ought to turn to Michy Batshuayi – a player the club have been linked with several times before.

At the moment, there are reports that Rangers are interested in Batshuayi, who plays his football at Turkish giants Fenerbahce these days.

He has been there since 2022, having left Chelsea following several loan moves.

Batshuayi had joined the Blues for £33 million, but failed to break into the team as a regular starter at Stamford Bridge.

Currently, Batshuayi finds himself in another frustrating situation regarding his game time.

The star has only made 11 appearances in the Super Lig, for a total of 227 minutes. His opportunities have tended to come more in the Europa Conference League.

Despite his lack of minutes this season (Just 867 across all competitions), Batshuayi has still managed to score a respectable eight goals for the club.

His overall record at the club is pretty good – he has scored 28 goals in 53 appearances.

In 2022, Wolves were linked a few times with a move for Batshuayi, with one claim being made that Wolves were seeking to sign the player on loan from Chelsea ahead of the 2022/23 season, and that an offer

Is he gettable?

Batshuayi’s contract at Fenerbahce is up at the end of the season. However, the Turkish giants do have an option to extend it by a further year.

But the club’s president reportedly told the player (via Fotomac): “If you want to stay, there is a place for you at Fenerbahce. But if you’re going to be restless when you’re in the dugout, it affects the team. Let us know your final decision as soon as possible.”

That suggests Batshuayi would be able to depart this month if he wanted to and there was a suitable offer presented. He would surely consider a move back to the Premier League, as he seeks to make Belgium’s Euro 2024 later this year.

A move by Wolves would make sense. Batshuayi is 30 and has lots of experience under his belt and has played in several leagues in his career.

He has shown that, despite limited game time, he can score goals and obviously he has Premier League experience having played for Chelsea and also Crystal Palace on loan.

Wolves have been linked several times with him over the past few years – now could be the perfect time to finally get him in.
