Why Wolves captain Toti Gomes is staying positive about the season despite woeful start

Toti Gomes has assumed the responsibilities of captain this season, and he’s confident Wolves can rectify a poor opening month of the season.

Losing against Newcastle on Saturday didn’t come as a shock.

Eddie Howe’s side are formidable at St James’ Park, especially against Wolves, and the performance itself was actually quite strong from Vitor Pereira’s side.

But the result is what matters, and it’s a historic fourth straight loss to start the campaign.

Despite Wolves’ position at the bottom of the Premier League table, Toti Gomes is remaining calm and focused, convinced they can turn things around.

Toti Gomes is staying positive about Wolves’ prospects this season

Zero points after four games is enough to put a panic on even the staunchest Wolves optimist.

But Toti is remaining positive, believing there is still plenty of time to improve.

Speaking to Birmingham Live, the Portuguese centre-back shared his thoughts: “It’s not the end of the world.

“Things don’t look that beautiful for us, but we cannot think negatively, keep positive and keep working hard; we still have a lot of time to improve, and we’re going to do it.”

The season is in its infancy, but the amount of time Wolves have to sort themselves out mightn’t be as long as the captain claims, with the gap to the pack in front widening with each loss.

Wolves defence has been less than convincing under Toti Gomes’ leadership

Toti was handed the armband this season after Nelson Semedo’s exit, and the early stages of his tenure have been made difficult by the amount of change Wolves underwent this summer.

They have struggled to come up with goals, it’s true, but it’s the silly mistakes at the back that have made it so difficult to get a result.

Wolves’ starting XI has changed with each passing game, and it’s clearly impacting their ability to stay organised at the back.

Now that Ladislav Krejci has joined the defensive line, it will mean competition for starting places. Yerson Mosquera has also looked great since making his return from injury.

Hopefully, the threat of being benched can give certain players the kick they need to improve performances.

As Toti puts it: “Of course, we had some little mistakes in each of the games that we lost.

“We know that those little mistakes caused the defeats that we had. But these are things that we can correct, and we can still improve, and that’s what we’re going to do.”
