Why Mario Lemina was not involved last night for Wolves against Luton

Wolves played against Luton Town last night in their penultimate pre-season friendly – but there was no sign of Mario Lemina.

It was another useful exercise for Julen Lopetegui’s side.

And it was a fairly good performance on the whole from Wolves.

The game finished 0-0. But Wolves created plenty of chances of there were quite a few positives to take from the game.

The performance of Fabio Silva in attack was especially promising.

And it was also good to see Sasa Kalajdzic back out on the pitch at Molineux.

But interestingly, there was no Lemina last night for Wolves…

Mario Lemina missed out last night through illness

Fans noticed instantly last night that Lemina was not in the squad.

Some assumed that he must have picked up a knock either against Celtic or in training.

But journalist Liam Keen reported just ahead of kick-off that Lemina was actually unavailable through illness last night.

Lopetegeui therefore handed starts to Joao Gomes and Boubacar Traore in midfield.

Joe Hodge, heavily involved against FC Porto and Celtic, dropped to the bench.

Wolves did well without Lemina

It was always going to be interesting to see how Wolves got on last night without Lemina.

He has become one of the most important players in the team since he arrived at the club in January.

Lemina is a fantastic ball-winner and full of energy, and the midfield is better for having him in it.

But Gomes and Traore did OK in his absence which will encourage Lopetegui.

Hopefully Lemina will be able to recover quickly and be able to feature in Saturday’s game against Rennes.

It is paramount that he is in a good way leading up to that first Premier League game of the season.
