Why Joao Gomes should not push to leave Wolves in January amid Man United interest

Joao Gomes finds himself the subject of interest from Manchester United, but there are several reasons why he should not agitate to leave Wolves in January.

Joao Gomes’ future has become a hot topic over the last couple of weeks.

It’s been claimed that Wolves have promised new manager Rob Edwards that Gomes won’t be sold in January.

Rob Edwards addresses Joao Gomes transfer rumours

“We’ve spoken about stuff but my focus has been on getting the team organised. We have got some good players and there will always be interest, but I’m not aware of anything. Joao has been excellent this week.”

But speculation persists over the Brazilian, with Wolves’ current mess showing no signs of changing any time soon.

Over the weekend, new claims were made about Gomes, with an outlet in Brazil reporting that Wolves and Man United have ramped up talks regarding a potential January move for Gomes.

But here’s why he should not try to leave Wolves in the next window.

Gomes has been a hugely popular player at Wolves ever since he arrived.

Fans took to him even before he completed his transfer to the club, as there were reports that he was holding out for a move to Wolves despite Lyon offering Flamengo more money.

His move to Wolves was stalling, and fans then started a #FreeJoaoGomes campaign on social media.

Gomes eventually completed a move to Molineux, with Matt Hobbs later admitting that the move wouldn’t have happened without the stance Gomes took (via Wolves official).

Gomes is approaching three years at Wolves, and his popularity remains high at Molineux, with fans adoring his infectious energy and how he clearly cares about the club.

United’s interest in Gomes is very real, but the Brazilian should see out the season with Wolves.

The chance of relegation is high, but he would have the respect of fans forever if he didn’t walk out on the club.

The temptation to depart could be strong at this point.

But the likelihood is that if he stays at Wolves until the end of the season, he is probably going to have clubs coming in for him again.

Perhaps Wolves will ultimately try to cash in on him in the January window while his value is higher.

But by rejecting any push to ship him out, he would be idolised even more by Wolves fans and he would ensure a fantastic reception to every return to Molineux with another club in the future.

Joao Gomes has been a top signing for Wolves

Gomes will certainly go down as one of the better signings of the Fosun era.

He was bought for £15 million which has proven to be a real bargain, with Gomes now being valued at around three times that initial fee.

When Ruben Neves left the club in the summer of 2023, it was paramount that Gomes stepped up and he really did that.

He had big shoes to fill, and Gomes also assumed Neves’ old number eight shirt which probably brought about additional pressure.

But despite these things, Gomes has risen to the occasion many times in a Wolves shirt and is likely to leave the club a cult hero. Hopefully, we do not see him push to depart in the next window, which is something that could jeopardise this.
