Why former Wolves manager Mick McCarthy was really ‘scared of nothing’ at Blackburn in viral clip from 2010

Mick McCarthy gave Wolves fans some great memories during his time at Molineux.

McCarthy joined Wolves in the summer of 2006 after Glenn Hoddle left the club before the start of the 2006/07 season.

It was going to be a big job for McCarthy, with not much money to spend and several players out of the club with their contracts expiring.

A finish towards the bottom of the table was expected. But McCarthy surprised everyone by finishing sixth in his first season.

Although that season finished with a play-off semi-final defeat to West Bromwich Albion, fans were won over by his battle-hardened persona and quick wit.

McCarthy got Wolves promoted to the Premier League at the end of his third season.

There was rarely a dull moment with McCarthy at the helm, and he certainly left fans amused when he went viral on social media for something he did all the way back in 2010.

When many fans think of Mick McCarthy, they first think about that clip of him that went viral on social media.

Wolves were taking on Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park back in December 2010.

The clip shows McCarthy being filmed on the touchline just before kick-off, and for some reason, he gets the fright of his life.

But there is just absolutely no one near McCarthy, which fans have found hilarious.

In recent years, the clip has done the rounds many times on social media, with fans left in hysterics whenever it resurfaces.

But just why did McCarthy, normally so cool, calm and collected, jump out of his skin?

He previously told talkSPORT: “We’re at Blackburn, and when you go to the dugout, all the players kick the balls to the dugout. And the ‘keepers kick the balls to the dugout, to try and hit the manager, to try and hit the coach, trying to hit the players in the dugout!

“And I’m walking out and Pat Mountain the goalkeeper coach went ‘Gaffer, watch your head!’ and I ducked and of course, there’s nothing there. So Mick McCarthy’s scared of nothing!”

What McCarthy said about ‘Careless Whisper’ viral clip

That wasn’t the only time McCarthy has been the feature of a viral clip on social media.

Another hilarious clip did the rounds of the former Wolves manager – who’d just had surgery on his ankle – leaning beside the dugout at Molineux looking pensive. One version of said clip is set to audio of George Michael’s Careless Whisper.

As the camera gets closer, McCarthy produces a hilarious expression, staring almost flirtatiously into the camera lens and raising his eyebrows slightly.

On that, McCarthy said: “I’m sat there and I’ve got crutches and a boot on my foot because I’ve had my ankle operated on.

“I’m sat on the stool that’s been put there outside the dugout. And I can see the guy walking towards me with the camera. And it’s a bit like, what do you do!? Do you smile at him, wink at him, say ‘Hi’, say anything?

“And of course, I almost blew a kiss at him almost.”
