Where Joao Gomes could rank in biggest ever Wolves sales amid Man United transfer interest

Wolves fans are growing increasingly concerned that Joao Gomes could leave the club in the January transfer window.

Joao Gomes is considered one of the best players at Wolves, having enjoyed a great rise since his move to the club in 2023.

But there is now a feeling that this might be his last season at Molineux.

How much is Joao Gomes worth in today’s market?

We know how Fosun operates, with top stars being sold off after a few years of being at the club.

Gomes will have been at Wolves for three years in January 2026, and it seems Manchester United are looking to prise him away.

Initially, it was claimed they were eyeing a summer move. But it was then reported that Wolves and Man United are both ‘optimistic’ of a sale at the turn of the year.

It’ll be another big-money move, but where might Gomes rank in terms of all-time sales at Wolves if he goes for the fee that is being reported?

David Ornstein reported that Wolves sources have indicated there haven’t been talks over Gomes just yet.

That update will have been welcome news for Wolves fans, but there is still a chance he goes.

If Wolves are cut too far adrift by the time the next window rolls around, the strategy may well be to plan for the Championship, and sell big stars before the summer.

It has been claimed that a deal for Gomes to join United could be in the region of about £44 million.

That would be a lot of money, and seems like fair value for a player of Gomes’ quality but also factoring in Wolves’ situation.

If reports prove to be accurate, Joao Gomes could become one of the biggest sales ever at Wolves

If Gomes is sold for £44 million, then that would see him place fourth on Wolves’ list of biggest ever departures.

Matheus Cunha is the club record sale at £62.5 million. And he is followed by Portuguese trio Pedro Neto and Matheus Nunes and Ruben Neves.

Then it would be Gomes.

Joao Gomes set to make Fosun more profit

If Gomes transfers for that mooted fee of £44 million, then it would see Fosun turn yet another handsome profit on a player.

Gomes signed for Wolves for around £15 million in January 2023.

And it looks like he could sell for three times that amount, which will no doubt please the owners.

But as much as it will please them, it will infuriate most fans, who have grown tired of watching top players leave Molineux after only a few years.

The cycle then repeats, with Wolves turning to markets abroad in the hope of landing another potential star of the future.
