When Bastien Meupiyou could start making matchday squads for Wolves

Wolves made seven new additions in the summer, and Bastien Meupiyou is the only player fans have not yet seen.

The club had a busy end to the summer window, with Andre and Carlos Forbs arriving on deadline day.

The day before though, Wolves completed a move for Bastien Meupiyou, signing the youngster from Nantes for around £4.2 million.

The plan was for Meupiyou, 18, to find his feet at the club first and perhaps get some minutes under his belt with the U21s.

But the starlet did actually arrive carrying an injury, which he only recently recovered from. He has been in training with the first-team for the past couple of weeks, and some have wondered if Meupiyou could potentially get any minutes from Gary O’Neil soon.

Liam Keen gave an update on the player on Thursday.

Wolves currently have just three centre-back options following the injury to Yerson Mosquera earlier this season.

We have seen Alfie Pond make the bench recently, though he has not played in the Premier League.

Meupiyou was recently spotted back on the grass at Compton, and is now in full first-team training at Wolves, and journalist Liam Keen believes it will not be much longer until we see him making first-team matchday squads.

He said: “When I asked Gary about this recently he said ‘Look, we didn’t bring him in to play Premier League football straight away but we may have to have a look at him, in training and potentially in some games pretty soon’.

“I don’t think he’s going to all of a sudden out of nowhere start in the Premier League without having played a single minute. I think that would be unlikely and unwise. But it wouldn’t surprise me to see if Wolves are hanging on to a result if he comes off the bench.

“He’s in team training now, he wouldn’t be too far (off) at all. I think you’ll see him on the bench probably relatively soon. I could see him taking Pond’s place there.

“FA Cup seems like the obvious opportunity to give him minutes in English football. I think we’ll see him slowly get introduced over the next couple of weeks and months.

“But to see him jump in out of nowhere before the FA Cup, unless they see something from him in training… I would say unlikely.”

Mosquera injury may open the door for Meupiyou

The injury to Mosquera is something that could well open the door for Meupiyou at Wolves.

Currently, O’Neil is down to just three senior centre-backs, and he is using all three at once which is potentially unsustainable.

The feeling is that Wolves will sign a new centre-back in January. But there could still be opportunities for Meupiyou this season, especially if Wolves manage a decent FA Cup run.

Ultimately, Craig Dawson is 34 and he will surely need rotating more in the second half of the season.

So Meupiyou must try and make a big impression in training, because it’s possible O’Neil – or a new manager if he gets sacked – will want to call on him
