Wolves will be looking to do something they haven’t achieved in 15 years this weekend, and that is winning a league match at Anfield.
The last time Wolves beat Liverpool away from home in the Premier League was in December 2010 as Stephen Ward rifled home his strike to secure Mick McCarthy’s men a 1-0 victory.
Hardly anyone expects Vitor Pereira’s side to replicate those heroics on Sunday, with Roy Keane, Ian Wright and Gary Neville predicting Liverpool to beat Wolves.
The Old Gold have lost 12 of their previous 14 matches against the Reds in all competitions and considering Arne Slot’s men are gunning for the league title, the Premier League strugglers have their work cut out.
But, as seen on numerous occasions this season, anything can happen in football and Pereira is instilling real confidence into his players.

Vitor Pereira calls his Wolves squad ‘the best players in the country’
Ahead of Wolves’ trip to Liverpool this weekend, Arne Slot was full of praise for Matheus Cunha, the man with 12 goals in all competitions in 2024/25.
Cunha recently signed a new contract after being hunted by many of the Premier League’s top sides. The Brazilian is expected to leave in the summer but for now, he’s by far and away Pereira’s best player.
The 25-year-old is playing with real confidence at the moment having scored in wins over Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers.
There is perhaps a reason for him and his teammates stepping up their performances, as remarkably, Pereira drills into them that they are ‘the best players in the country’.
Speaking in Friday’s press conference, the Wolves manager said, as per journalist Liam Keen: “I respect every team and Liverpool is one of the best in this league, but I must look at my players. For me, they are the best players in the country because they are my players.”
It’s such confidence that has seen Wolves take the scalps of Manchester United, Villa and Leicester City since Pereira arrived, though it would take something remarkable to beat Liverpool.
Wolves must take inspiration from Nottingham Forest’s win vs Liverpool
There’s no hiding away from the fact that, while Pereira backs his players as ‘the best’, the task of winning at Anfield is an accomplishment few rarely achieve.
However, Nottingham Forest proved that by setting up correctly and taking their chance, it is possible to overhaul the Slot juggernaut.
In September, Forest secured a 1-0 victory away at Liverpool, despite recording just 30% possession and three shots on target.
Match stats | Liverpool | Nottingham Forest |
Shots | 14 | 5 |
Shot on target | 5 | 3 |
Possession | 70% | 30% |
Passes | 604 | 273 |
Fouls | 15 | 6 |
Corners | 7 | 2 |
Callum Hudson-Odoi’s 72nd-minute winner sent the away end into delirium and kickstarted what has been a wonderful season for the Reds, who sit in third position.
Wolves can take inspiration from how Nuno Espirito Santo set his side up to counter-attack, showing aggression defensively and ruthlessness in attack.
