What Toti Gomes did vs Burnley involving Joao Gomes that may have boosted his Wolves captaincy bid

Vitor Pereira is currently in the process of deciding who Wolves’ next captain will be, with Toti Gomes in the frame.

Nelson Semedo won’t re-sign with Wolves after becoming a free agent, with Vitor Pereira having admitted the club are looking to replace the 31-year-old.

The Semedo situation has frustrated fans, with many dumbfounded as to why a decision has still not been communicated yet.

It’s a double whammy for Wolves. Not only has a consistent and proven Premier League performer left, but Wolves have now once again lost a captain.

On the face of it, there is not a particularly obvious candidate to step into the role.

But Toti Gomes is in the frame, and one thing he did against Burnley might stand him in good stead with Vitor Pereira.

Toti was given the armband for a half against Santa Clara with Matt Doherty wearing it for the other.

But against Burnley at the weekend, Toti was the captain for the whole game, with Doherty playing around an hour.

Potentially, that was a hint from Pereira, who is still deciding who to make captain full-time.

And there was a moment in the game where Toti showed his leadership capabilities, and it was when there was a ‘flashpoint’ involving Joao Gomes.

Liam Keen said on the E&S podcast: “I think he’s got to be the frontrunner for sure. Very intelligent guy, intelligent footballer, liked.

“I mean, there was nothing major against Burnley, a couple of little flashpoints, but there was one point that Toti stood up for Joao Gomes as well. I don’t mind it, I like that. Get yourself involved.

“I like that Toti got involved, and I think as a player he’s dependable and reliable, I’m a big fan. I think he’s a frontrunner at the moment, so let’s see if anyone can take that off him. He knows the club, he’s been around, Vitor likes him, I think he’s probably got a good chance.”

Toti Gomes would be a deserving Wolves captain

At the moment, it looks like the armband could be Toti’s to lose.

And it would be great to see him become Wolves’ next leader, as it really would just cap off a brilliant rise at the club.

Toti has worked his socks off at Wolves. He didn’t always play in the beginning, after being brought back to Molineux from his loan spell at Grasshoppers.

But he has never once complained and is the epitome of a team player.

Toti recently spoke about Wolves signing competition, even in his own place. He wants what is best for this squad.

In a way he reflects the fans in that he is a really hard worker, and it’d be great to see him rewarded with the captaincy.

And to hear that he’s standing up for his teammates is obviously a big green flag.
