What the ‘excellent’ Tommy Doyle was doing in Wolves pre-season training in Miami

Tommy Doyle reportedly impressed during a Wolves pre-season training session on Thursday.

Wanderers are continuing their preparations for the 2024/25 season and are currently in the US. On Saturday, Wolves play against West Ham United, before taking on Crystal Palace and RB Leipzig.

It has been a productive pre-season so far.

Gary O’Neil put his players through their paces in Marbella, and the three new faces – Rodrigo Gomes, Pedro Lima and Jorgen Strand Larsen – all made a good impression.

Wolves actually technically have made four signings this summer. Before those three arrived, the club turned Tommy Doyle‘s loan move permanent.

And the midfielder was apparently looking in good form this morning.

Last season, Doyle caught the eye for Wolves.

He didn’t play every single game, with Mario Lemina and Joao Gomes the preferred partnership for most of the campaign.

But Doyle still got plenty of opportunities, and there is a hope that he will really kick on now in 2024/25.

Doyle did not have a pre-season ahead of his loan move to Wolves from Manchester City last summer. He had picked up a knock while on duty with the England U21s at the European Championships. His move to Wolves was eventually announced on deadline day, with the season having already started.

This time around, Doyle is rested, fit and ready to go- and he’s making an impression.

Journalist Liam Keen was in attendance for Wolves’ training session this morning at their base in Miami, and he said on X: “Tommy Doyle’s passing has been excellent today. Switching to each side, cross-field, outside of the boot – the lot.”

Doyle will prove to be an amazing signing for Wolves

Wolves fans are bound to be encouraged by these remarks from Keen.

Wolves exercised their option to buy Doyle for just under £5 million, and that is an absolute bargain fee for a player of his quality and potential.

We saw last season how effective Doyle can be in terms of dictating the tempo of games from the base of midfield.

He doesn’t have the tenacity, physicality or athleticism of Lemina or Gomes. But he is definitely a better technician and playmaker and is therefore a fantastic option for the manager.

There will be many games in 2024/25 where Doyle will be the best option to play in midfield, and one would imagine he will be even better in his second season now that he knows how the team works and has that Premier League experience.
