What the coaching staff have accepted about new Wolves signing Pedro Lima

Wolves had a busy summer, and it feels quite a long time ago that the club signed Pedro Lima.

Lima was Wolves‘ second new addition (not counting Tommy Doyle) of the summer window, signing from Sport Recife for around £8.5 million.

Wolves stole a march on Chelsea for the teenager, and had presented a project that was more in line with what Lima wanted and what would be more beneficial for him.

Wolves were really delighted to get him, and have very high hopes for the youngster.

Lima caught the eye pretty quickly in pre-season, and laid on a fantastic assist for fellow new signing Rodrigo Gomes in the friendly against West Ham United in Jacksonville.

So far in 2024/25, Lima has made just one appearance – against Burnley in the Carabao Cup.

Lima did really well, and grabbed his first competitive assist with a great cross for Goncalo Guedes.

The early signs are promising over Lima. But fans should not expect to see much more of him in these opening months of the new season.

Nelson Semedo is available again for Wolves after serving a three-game suspension due to the red card he picked up against Liverpool on the final day of last season.

We know O’Neil adores Semedo, and the Portuguese stands to play the bulk of the games at right-back this season.

Matt Doherty is the second-choice, and the Republic of Ireland international has arguably been one of Wolves’ better performers in these first few games.

So Lima looks like he will need to be patient for opportunities at Molineux – and not just because he has strong competition.

Journalist Johnny Phillips has written in his latest Football Unfiltered Substack that the coaching staff at Wolves accept that patience is needed with Lima.

Gary O’Neil also said this towards the end of Wolves’ pre-season trip to the US.

First season about learning for Lima

Fans have been quite excited about Lima since his arrival.

The reports that came out about him during pre-season were very positive and clearly, he is a very bright young player.

But fans should not expect too much. Lima has come to a big club in England and the adaptation will not be easy.

This first season is, really, all about learning for him. He is not going to be playing much for the first-team, and he will instead need to get used to his environment and also pick the brains of his teammates – especially Semedo.

Lima will also hopefully improve his English to gain a clearer understanding of what O’Neil and the coaches want from him.
