What Rob Edwards screamed at his Wolves players in training ahead of Brentford, two words stand out

Wolves have not been good enough this season and Rob Edwards is trying his level best to improve the situation.

It hasn’t been a good start for him, losing six games out of six so far.

There have been some positive signs. Wolves looked decent against top teams like Aston Villa and Arsenal.

The biggest positive so far about Rob Edwards since he became Wolves manager is _______________

But ultimately, there is no consistency or, crucially, cutting edge.

The lack of quality in the final third this season has been extremely alarming, with Wolves a complete shadow of the team they’ve been in recent years.

Jorgen Strand Larsen is having a nightmare campaign, but the supporting cast consisting of Jhon Arias, Tolu Arokodare, Fer Lopez and Hwang Hee-chan have all struggled too.

Rob Edwards comes across very mild-mannered, but he cannot have been too happy with what he’s seen from his team in the final third – and Dave Edwards has made some interesting comments about his namesake after a recent visit to the training ground.

Edwards is known for being nice and personable, and he certainly comes across very calm when speaking in press conferences and interviews.

We do see him become animated on the touchline at times. But, by and large, he keeps himself in check.

But towards the back end of last week, Dave Edwards was speaking about Rob Edwards and what he saw him doing in training.

And it turns out Rob can certainly be fierce. And the players bore the brunt of his frustrations at Compton Park.

Dave said on the Official Wolves Podcast: “You could see him constantly speaking to his coaches. ‘I need to see this, I need to see that’. He was high energy, but he also had an edge as well, which I really liked.

“There was a five-minute spell where we were missing chances, and he was not happy. And he was like, ‘Be ruthless!’, but a bit more aggressive than that. But he was like, on the forward players. It’s training, but you finish that ball.

“You can get that in training. The ball will come in the box and it’ll be a bit half-hearted, you do get it. He was like, and in a stricter tone and using a few expletives, ‘This has to be like a game, if you’re not finishing it here, you’re not going to be finishing it on a Saturday’, and he was on them.

“It was nice to see that side of Rob, I’ve only ever seen him as a first-team coach where you do get a bit of that, but not to that level. He had a really nice dynamic in training.”

Unfortunately, following this firm request from Edwards, Wolves could not score against Brentford on Saturday and in truth, didn’t really come close, mustering just one shot on target.

How Rob Edwards feels about progress at Wolves

It has obviously been a really tough start for Rob at Wolves.

But it was likely always going to be, with the quality of the squad just not there.

He has made mistakes, but undoubtedly Rob needs the January window and for those above him to try and get this squad to a level where it can compete.

For now though, Rob is optimistic about the situation. And he’s also working his socks off to prompt an improvement.

Dave said: “I spoke to him afterwards, it looked like he hasn’t slept much. He was saying he’s been up there every single day. Apart from like, one day a week he might be at home a bit more, but he arrives at 6:30am and doesn’t go home until 7pm.

“He is fully in this role, which I always said, no one will work as hard as Rob Edwards in this job. So you know he’s doing everything he can. He’s finding it difficult that they’re not getting the results, but he does feel that they’re close. He feels they’re really close. They need to take the lead in a game, that’s critical for setting the team up.”
