What Rob Edwards has noticed about Hwang Hee-chan in Wolves training

Hwang Hee-chan has not had the best time at Wolves over the last 18 months.

The South Korean has struggled to return to the goalscoring form he once showed at Molineux back in 2023/2024 and has often been a point of criticism for fans.

However, Hwang Hee-chan has not been the only Wolves player in a slump, with others far from reaching the levels they are expected to.

Against Arsenal, the forward was handed his first start under Rob Edwards, and the combination of Hwang and Strand Larsen looked threatening at times.

It also seems he has left a great impression, both in matches and training.

💭 Agree or Disagree: With Brentford likely missing some key attackers on Saturday, Rob Edwards should go bold and play a back four!

Dango Ouattara is at AFCON, Igor Thiago is a doubt, and Edwards is down two CBs in Emmanuel Agbadou and Yerson Mosquera…

Hwang Hee-chan may now be pushing for back-to-back starts after what Rob Edwards has come out and said about him.

The South Korean attacker has often found himself out of favour, but a chance to gain back a consistent starting role could now be on the cards.

Speaking ahead of facing Brentford, Edwards said, “I was really pleased with Channy. Maybe it’s been a bit of a difficult period for him, like it would have been for a lot of lads, but he has really impressed us.

“His training attitude has been top, but his game understanding and his tactical understanding is great. We were walking off at half-time at Arsenal, and he’s almost giving me the half-time talk.

“All the stuff that’s in my head, that I’ve been speaking about with the staff, he’s seeing and he’s actually doing and executing it out on the pitch because he’s really intelligent.”

The 29-year-old will now want to kick on and revive his career at Wolves for the rest of the season. With his manager’s backing, who knows what he could do?

A return of a prime Hwang Hee-chan would be welcomed by supporters of the club, who know just how devastating he can be against opposition teams.

Hwang Hee-chan needs to be positioned as close to the box as possible

If there is one way to describe Hwang Hee-chan, he is certainly a fox in the box.

The South Korean is much better platformed when he is given the freedom to be as close and high up to the opponents’ penalty box rather than stuck out on the wing.

While Wolves do not have many options out wide, utilising the wing-backs for width and pushing players like Hwang centrally could make all the difference.

He looked sharp in that position against Arsenal, so it has to be worth trying against weaker defences. However, we have predicted Hwang to be benched on Saturday.
