What Rob Edwards has done at Wolves to yield the best culture ‘for a long time’

Rob Edwards has encouraged players and staff not to call him ‘gaffer’ when upon his arrival at Wolves.

The 43-year-old is coming up to four months in charge at Wolves now, after leaving Middlesbrough to a lot of controversy.

It was a very tough start for Rob Edwards in terms of the results.

He had walked into a house on fire, with team spirit and morale on the floor after such a terrible start to the new season under Vitor Pereira.

But things are now starting to click, albeit it is probably too late for Wolves to stay in the Premier League.

And Edwards is clearly a popular figure behind the scenes based off a new article from the Daily Mail.

What Rob Edwards has done behind the scenes

The Daily Mail’s article makes for an interesting read.

It is clear that Edwards has worked tremendously hard to try and turn around the fortunes of the club, and we are now starting to see positive change.

And the manager has done several subtle things to bring about a better culture behind the scenes.

Firstly, he has insisted on players and staff referring to him by his name. It sounds simple, but in football it is commonplace for managers to be referred to as ‘boss’ or ‘gaffer’, even by non-playing staff.

Edwards is also very much about Wolves doing ‘well for its own sake and not merely to further his own career’.

It’s stated he has even been ‘taking part in strategy meetings with other members of the leadership team, even if they do not relate directly to matters on the pitch’.

He also made a considered effort with everyone when he first arrived, and continues to do so, leading to a culture that is said to be better than it has been at Wolves ‘for a long time’.

We have seen in recent weeks the blossoming relationship Edwards has with the players, and as painful as relegation will be initially, that bodes extremely well for the future.

Wolves may regret not hiring Rob Edwards sooner

As was the case with Gary O’Neil, there was plenty of scope to sack Vitor Pereira weeks before the decision was eventually taken.

We’re now seeing the fruits of Edwards’ labour at Wolves and clearly, things are in a very good place behind the scenes.

But it’s going to prove too little, too late for Wolves in terms of staying up.

Perhaps if Wanderers had made this appointment weeks earlier, there may have been a greater chance of actually staying up.

But the information shared by the Daily Mail is encouraging to say the least.

Things were dismal under Pereira, but all the noise about the culture now under Edwards is certainly welcome.
