What Jeff Shi once said on transfers in 2019 shows a very sad decline at Wolves

It’s near impossible for the Wolves owners to repair their relationship with the fans after burning the once solid bridges.

Wolves have gone from playing on the Europa League stage under Nuno Espirito Santo to constantly battling against relegation from the Premier League.

The downward spiral suffered at Molineux is due to the actions of Fosun, whose constant asset stripping and failure to back the manager have caused a trend in the wrong direction.

Every season, the Wanderers are at risk of falling through the relegation trap door, and this time around, it’s Vitor Pereira aiming to pull off an escape act after Gary O’Neil left them in the mire.

Some fans accept that if the club continues to operate well below their means, dropping into the second tier is inevitable, and that is a sad prospect, considering how brilliant they were doing in 2019.

Jeff Shi’s comments on Wolves transfers in 2019

In the January transfer window, the Old Gold left their business till the last minute. Remarkably, Wolves were the second-highest spenders behind only Manchester City in the Premier League, following the signings of Emmanuel Agbadou, Nasser Djiga and Marshall Munetsi.

The winter was used as a rescue job in an attempt to make up for how poor the summer was, namely their failure to replace captain Max Kilman and winger Pedro Neto.

But, while the clubs hierarchy lack transparency with the fanbase these days, this was completely different six years ago. Chairman Jeff Shi was open about transfers, revealing how he was going to invest in the squad and build on the foundations laid by Nuno Santo.

Speaking to Sky Sports in 2019, Shi said: “The team is still the core. If we can’t win games on the pitch it will not be helpful for us.

“So we are going to continue to invest in the squad and improve. I know some fans are maybe a little bit nervous, but we are working really hard. So don’t worry, we will be ready.”

Shi rarely ever speaks in public or attends games anymore, but when he does, he usually angers large sections of the fanbase.

Wolves summer transfer window in 2019 was incredible

Following the second consecutive seventh-place finish in the Premier League in 2019, Wolves were able to attract some quality players.

Nuno Santo completed six permanent transfers, including flop striker Patrick Cutrone, though the highlights of that window were Raul Jimenez joining permanently and Pedro Neto.

Jimenez became Wolves Premier League top scorer while Neto developed into one of the league’s best wingers, with both players adored by the Molineux faithful.

Since that transfer window, the club have experienced a sad decline down the league table and watched most of their talents depart for pastures new.
