Wolves assistant head coach Tim Jenkins applauds Tommy Doyle for work with young players

Despite signing for Wolves on loan from Manchester City last season, Tommy Doyle is classed as one of O’Neil’s 2024/25 captures.

The midfielder made his move permanent from City at the expiration of his loan and has caught the attention of many during pre-season training.

Speaking to Express and Star, O’Neil’s assistant waxed lyrical about Doyle’s approach to helping young players.

Several upcoming talents have joined the first team in Marbella, with Jenkins mentioning Doyle’s assistance with fellow central midfielder Luke Rawlings.

“The other day we did some patterns of play in midfield and Tommy Doyle was excellent with Luke. He’s been in that position before coming through the academy position.

“He not only encouraged him but gave him details to try and help him and spoke to him after the session.

“Sometimes the players around them will be their best coaches and Tommy is a really good example.”

Having risen from Manchester City’s academy himself, Doyle understands what it takes to graduate from a Premier League academy, with him now a valued senior player at Wolves.

Doyle’s help will be crucial to Wolves’ rising talents

The journey to making it out of a Premier League academy is incredibly tough, with a relatable insight into the task at hand valuable for less experienced players.

The former Manchester City academy jewel had to be patient to earn his chance to shine, picking up only seven senior apperances for Pep Guardiola’s side during his time at the club.

Having seen how far hard work can take a player such as Doyle, Wolves’ youngsters are in good hands to understand what can be achieved.

Speaking in Marbella, assistant head coach Jenkins stressed the importance of the academy stars having the chance to train with the first team, emphasising the opportunity the teens have.

“We’re trying to offer these guys the best experience possible and it’s then down to them to push on.”

It will be interesting to see how O’Neil integrates the young players into the squad next season, with Doyle’s leadership something positive to take from Jenkins’ assessment.
