What Conor Coady did for Wolves in 2016/17 that later left Romain Saiss in stitches

Romain Saiss and Conor Coady are two players a lot of Wolves fans miss.

The defensive duo both left the club in recent years, and Wolves’ haven’t fared particularly well since they departed.

Saiss came to Molineux in the summer of 2016 in Fosun’s first transfer window, signing from French club Angers.

At Wolves he became teammates with Conor Coady, who’d joined from Huddersfield Town in 2015.

The pair would go on to become key players for Wanderers, helping the club climb out of the Championship and become an established Premier League outfit.

When Saiss first came to the club, he played in midfield with Coady – who was recently linked with a sensational return to Wolves.

The pair would eventually both move into Wolves’ three-man backline, with Coady especially effective in that niche middle role.

He excelled in that role, but there was one position he sometimes played in his early days that gave Saiss the giggles.

Coady came to Wolves as a holding midfielder, but shifted into defence under Nuno Espirito Santo.

That then became his position for years, and it was one he played to a pretty high standard during his time at Wolves.

But there were times before Nuno arrived at Wolves when Coady – a man never known for his pace – actually found himself playing at right-back.

And in April 2022 in an interview with Wolves TV, Saiss gave an hilarious reaction as he recalled when this happened.

He said: “So many things to say about him. Not only about him as a midfielder, but as a right-back (Saiss throws his head back laughing).

“I’m not sure they’ll believe me, the young players, if I said to them Coady was a midfielder or right-back (laughs again).

“It’s quite funny how he adapting himself to this new position to play centre-back. He just keeps improving, now he’s called for the England national team, he deserves it.

“But midfield was not the funniest one. The funniest one was right-back (laughs). Just put the ball down the channel, he couldn’t pass the (halfway) line to help, he was just thinking about defending!”

How Pedro Neto reacted to finding out Coady played right-back

Coady appeared in a video a few years ago alongside Pedro Neto on the Sky Sports Premier League YouTube channel.

The pair were asked to play a game of ‘Never Have I Ever’, which saw them hold up padels to indicate if they had or hadn’t done something.

One of the questions was ‘Never have a ever been rinsed by an opponent?’

Coady then admitted he had played right-back against Eden Hazard once and really struggled, with Neto left stunned by the idea of him playing in that role.

The Portuguese winger’s eyes couldn’t be wider and he mutters ‘right-back’ in disbelief, as Coady recounts facing the Belgian.
