‘What a season he’s having’ – Gary Lineker piles praise on Wolves star after what he did vs Liverpool

Wolves came up short against Liverpool – but there is admiration for the way the visitors played at Anfield.

Wolves lost 2-1 at Anfield, with Luis Diaz and Mo Salah scoring in the first-half for Liverpool.

Vitor Pereira’s side were poor defensively, but also got unlucky with one decision to award a penalty for a challenge by Jose Sa on Diaz.

Liverpool may also have been slightly fortuitous to not have Ibrahima Konate sent off.

Wolves were really good in the second-half after a couple of changes by Pereira at the break.

Wolves stopped Liverpool from having a single shot, which is the first time that’s happened at Anfield in the Premier League since 2003/04.

There were some really good performances – with Matheus Cunha once again shining bright.

Cunha scored in the second-half for Wolves, finding the bottom corner with his left foot after a lovely chop inside.

It was a moment of brilliance, from a player who has regularly delivered for a struggling Wolves team.

Cunha’s effort gave Wolves hope, but ultimately the team couldn’t quite find the equaliser.

Wolves were genuinely unlucky against Liverpool, but Cunha being back in form is a big boost for Pereira and Lineker piled praise on him.

Speaking on the latest Rest Is Football podcast, he said: “Cunha’s good, isn’t he? What a season he’s having as well, and for a team that’s struggling as well, which I think is always a really good sign of a player who can perform like that when things have perhaps been going against you.

“So much talent, so much ability. I used to really like him when he played at Atletico in Spain. But this season he’s backed up his ability with his numbers, certainly in terms of goals which has perhaps always been the one thing that – considering how good and talented he was in Spain – he didn’t quite have the prolific numbers.

“He’s scored some fantastic goals this season, including today’s.”

Cunha can be the difference for Wolves in relegation fight

Wolves could very well be fighting against relegation right until the end.

But none of their relegation rivals have a game-changing player, and someone who can do special things out of nowhere, like Cunha.

Cunha is Wolves’ best player, and Wanderers need him to just stay fit.

It will be so crucial that he is on the pitch as much as possible between now and the end of the season.

Loing him does not bear thinking about so hopefully Periera can somehow rotate him to reduce the possibility of injury.
