Jonny Castro Otto has penned an emotional message to Wolves supporters following his departure from the club this week.
After five and a half years at Wolves, Jonny’s contract was cancelled by mutual consent so he is now free to join another club.
During his time at Molineux, the Spaniard amassed 134 appearances for the Wanderers and played an integral role in their golden era under Nuno Espirito Santo.
A left-wing back, who would often find himself marauding into the opposition box, Jonny was loved by most supporters but one incident has threatened to tarnish his whole legacy at Wolves.
The 29-year-old has not featured for Gary O’Neil’s side since being involved in a training ground incident which resulted in him being banished from the first team.
Although O’Neil previously said that he could have a future at Wolves and claimed one mistake shouldn’t define his whole time at the club, the Wanderers put a ban in place until the end of January, giving them time to facilitate his exit.
He has now penned a heartfelt message to Wolves supporters following his time at the club.
What did Jonny say after leaving Wolves?
It’s easy to get blinded by what unfolded in the present day, but Jonny’s time at Wolves deserves to be celebrated for the good times rather than one sorry mistake.
He played a huge part in both Europa League campaigns under Nuno and will always be remembered for the crisp volley he scored against rivals Aston Villa two seasons ago.
Reflecting on his time at the club via an Instagram post, he wrote: ‘Five and a half years in the pack. What a dream come true…
Thank you for letting me be part of this family and for all the support with my injuries. My family grew up here and we are really happy to have been part of your community.
Once a wolf, always a wolf!’
After arriving from Celta Vigo for £18m in 2019, Jonny’s journey at Wolves has been a rollercoaster of emotions with incredible highs and lows along the way.
Describing his period at Molineux as a ‘dream’, it’s clear he thoroughly enjoyed his time at the club and that deserves to be celebrated.
What’s next for Jonny?
Wolves let Jonny depart by mutual consent, despite his contract expiring in 2025, as they feared a club wouldn’t take him off their hands before next week’s deadline.
It probably isn’t a surprise that no side has come in with a suitable permanent offer for him. He’s had to go through his fair share of adversity in recent times, suffering through two big knee injuries and hasn’t been a first-team regular for quite some time.
Now he’s been allowed to leave Molineux on a free transfer with Wolves cutting their losses, he’s free to find another club.
While this is a sad end for once a fantastic player, it’s a decision that is best for both parties.
Jonny doesn’t want to spend the final years of his career rotting by the wayside and wants to play football at a high level.
Whether any club will offer him that, remains to be seen given PAOK were interested.
