Welcome boost for Gary O’Neil as fringe Wolves player scores for his nation in ‘excellent’ U21 display

Gary O’Neil is looking to turn things around at Wolves and to do that he needs as many players in form as possible.

There have been signs of improvement recently, with Wolves now unbeaten in their last three Premier League games.

Wolves got their first win of the season against Southampton at Molineux, although it took two moments of real quality from Matheus Cunha to get the three points.

Wolves have been poor defensively this season but thankfully, there has been a cutting edge up top with Cunha and Jorgen Strand Larsen both among the goals.

It will be vital for Wolves to keep scoring if they are to progress up the table.

Others need to be chipping in, and hopefully Carlos Forbs will soon get off the mark for his new club.

Carlos Forbs was Wolves’ final signing of the summer window, joining from Ajax on loan. Wolves will be required to buy Forbs once he makes around 10 appearances.

So far, it’s been a fairly low-key start for Forbs at Molineux.

He’s made six appearances so far with five of those coming in the Premier League, only one of which has been a start.

He has work to do to break into the Wolves starting XI, and hopefully he’ll return to Compton now full of confidence after he scored for Portugal’s U21s against Slovakia.

They won 3-1 in a friendly last night and Forbs scored Portugal’s first after Slovakia had led through Sebastian Neybyla. It was by no means a memorable goal, with the youngster on hand to score after the ball was rolled across to him, but hopefully it’ll be a confidence booster.

The creator of respected site PortuGOAL Tom Kundbert watched the game and noted that Forbs was ‘excellent’ after coming on for the second-half.

The Wolves man was then taken off with around 10 minutes to go, after being brought down for a penalty, leading to concern about his condition.

Kundbert said it ‘looked bad at the time’, but added Forbs said after the game it was ‘nothing much’.

Forbs must kick on at Wolves

It’s great to hear that Forbs got some good minutes under his belt for the Portugal U21s and made some big contributions.

He hasn’t really gotten going at Wolves yet, but it’s difficult for him to break into the team due to the change of system and also the fact Cunha and Strand Larsen are pretty much nailed-on starters.

Forbs is the fastest forward in the Premier League, and that pace could be a big weapon for Wolves going forward.

We’ve seen him get into very promising positions as a result, and it’s now time for him to start chipping in with some goals.

Forbs needs to bring the goals Wolves that Pedro Neto and Adama Traore never really did, and we know he has an eye for goal from his impressive record in the Manchester City academy.
