‘We didn’t know’: £35m Wolves player now says he thought he could’ve left this summer

Fabio Silva has admitted that he wasn’t sure if he would stay at Wolves this summer.

The Portuguese forward gave an exclusive interview to Express and Star in which he admitted a departure had been on the cards, which was delaying a decision on him getting the number nine shirt at Wolves.

“That was a problem too!” Fabio said while laughing.

“At the beginning I asked for the number but they didn’t give me it because we didn’t know if I would stay or not.

“We had the conversation that they would give me the number nine if I stay, but when Matt Hobbs asked me if I was staying I didn’t 100 per cent have the answer.

“We waited until I knew the answer and when I decided to stay, we took care of it and they gave me the number nine. I am very glad and very proud.”

Silva explains fan relationship

Silva continued to discuss his relationship with the Wolves supporters at Molineux which has always been great since his £35 million arrival.

“The fans are one of the secrets for me to stay because if I’m playing or not, they support me. They are behind me and that’s most important.

“I’ll tell you the truth, during games in pre-season when I played, they sang a lot to me and that was one of the keys for me staying. I need this love, to stay here and give back to them.

“My message (to them) is that they can always expect from me my best, to run for the team and help the team with my movements.”

Clearly this relationship is a real source of pride for the forward.

Silva backed to do the number nine justice

As of this season so far, Silva hasn’t set the world alight, with just one goal in six games.

This will be a worrying figure for him, given he is lacking behind 18-year-old Nathan Fraser who also has a goal, but an assist too in just 28 minutes of play.

However Silva has recently been on fire for Portugal’s under-21s which is form he could take into his club football.

With Luton this weekend, a huge opportunity for Silva to grab a goal and establish himself for Gary O’Neil‘s side.
