Wayne Rooney shares whether Wolves will really get relegated after shambolic start

Wayne Rooney gave his verdict on whether Wolves really will get relegated this season after taking just two points from the first 11 games in the Premier League.

Wanderers are in huge trouble at the moment, and have just sacked Vitor Pereira.

The Portuguese simply couldn’t get a tune out of his players this season, and finally paid the price for an atrocious defeat against Fulham.

Wolves are now appointing Rob Edwards as Pereira’s successor.

It’s a move that caused controversy due to Edwards having not long been at Middlesbrough.

But Wolves have got their man, and fans are hoping he can instigate a miracle. Indeed, no team has ever stayed up after taking just two points from the first 11 Premier League games.

Most people have written Wolves off already. But what about Wayne Rooney?

It has been an abysmal season for Wolves.

There have been problems at the back and up front, and the squad is easily worse than it was last season, as it now lacks quality and leaders.

There have been some pitiful performances this term, and Pereira’s position as Wolves manager ultimately became untenable.

Edwards will now be tasked with trying to get Wolves out of this mess.

For Wayne Rooney, who sympathises with Middlesbrough fans over the Edwards situation, it’s not completely out of the question the Old Gold could survive, as Edwards prepares to start work.

He said on Match of the Day: “I wouldn’t say it’s impossible [they avoid relegation], but it’s unlikely.

“Their form this season has been horrendous really.

“That’s why they’ve changed manager, and it’s a tough job for Edwards.”

What Edwards must do to give Wolves a fighting chance

At this point, Wolves staying in the Premier League come the end of the season is unlikely.

But Wolves could at least give themselves a fighting chance if Edwards successfully manages to do a few things.

He’s got to tighten that backline up. Wolves have some decent defenders on paper and they should not be conceding goals at the rate they have been. Getting Emmanuel Agbadou back on song will be vital, and playing Ladislav Krejci in every game would also be advisable.

Edwards must also increase the output of the attackers. The form of Jorgen Strand Larsen is a real issue at the moment and without him playing to his best level, Wanderers are going to struggle massively, just like they have.

Home form will also be crucial. Fans at Molineux this season have really tried to support the team, but have ended up expressing their frustrations which is totally understandable given what’s been served up. There has also been apathy.

Edwards has to get his side to engage the crowd, and ultimately, Molineux needs to become a fortress again.
