Wolves are set for a new chapter with Rob Edwards having been chosen as Vitor Pereira’s replacement – and Wayne Rooney has reacted to the news.
Wolves’ search for a new head coach is over, with Rob Edwards returning to the club after a short spell with Middlesbrough.
Edwards only pitched up at the Riverside Stadium ahead of the 2025/26 season, replacing Michael Carrick.
But his time there is over, with Wolves paying Boro around £2 million in compensation to prise him away. There is disappointment and anger about this situation on the Middlesbrough side, but Wolves have got their man.
There is no overstating how big the job is that Edwards is taking on.
Wolves are in big trouble, and are currently bottom of the Premier League table, eight points adrift of safety.
The picture is looking bleak, and Wayne Rooney last night shared what he makes of Edwards walking away from Boro to join Wolves.

Wolves’ move for Edwards has certainly made a lot of headlines.
There is annoyance at the Riverside, with Boro not taking kindly to Wolves’ approach.
Boro ended up standing Edwards down for their game with Birmingham, and word then arrived of an agreement.
David Ornstein reported that Wolves are paying around £2 million in compensation for Edwards, although others have suggested it is slightly higher.
Edwards is being criticised by many Boro fans right now for walking away, disappointed in his apparent lack of loyalty.
On Match of the Day last night, Wayne Rooney gave his two cents on the situation, and can sympathise with Middlesbrough supporters.
He said: “I think they’ve got a point. I think he hasn’t been there for that long, with Boro bringing him in after his time at Luton.

“But then I also think, we see clubs getting rid of managers now after two months of being at the club, so you can question loyalty that way as well but I think for him, it’s a good opportunity. But I can see it from Middlesbrough fans’ (point of view) and why they would be upset with him.”
Rooney’s comments come after Alan Shearer also sympathised with Middlesbrough fans over Edwards’ move to Wolves, believing it to be ‘very harsh’ on the club.

Danny Murphy fully understands Rob Edwards’ move to Wolves
While Rooney can understand the vitriol from Boro fans about Edwards going to Wolves, Murphy thinks it’s easy to understand why he’s made the move.
He said: “I’m more of a realist in football these days. He’s got family in the area, in Telford near Wolves and he’s got an affinity to the club because he spent many years there as a player and coach as well.
“He’s going to get paid more money, which is important to some people, most people.

“And he’s probably, even if they were to go down with the parachute payments, going to have a much stronger squad with Wolves than Middlesbrough have got now.”
Wolves have clearly thought about the longer term by appointing Edwards.
Hopefully it won’t come to relegation, but at least if it does happen – and it does currently feel very likely – then Edwards should be a great person to have in charge given his knowledge of the Championship.
