Wayne Rooney delivers Wolves verdict after latest woeful defeat against Leeds

Wolves put in potentially their worst performance of the season against Leeds United, and Wayne Rooney gave some thoughts on Match of the Day.

Going into the game Wolves had handed new contracts to both Vitor Pereira and Jorgen Strand Larsen.

The hope was that these things would provide the team with a boost.

But it was the same old story for Wolves, who put in a terrible performance at Molineux, leading to boos both at half-time and full-time.

Wolves fans chanted against Fosun once again, and there is now potential for things to get ugly if things do not change rapidly.

It was a hugely disappointing performance just days after the announcement of Pereira’s new contract, and Wayne Rooney gave his assessment of the current situation on Match of the Day.

Wolves took the lead against Leeds, with Ladislav Krejci grabbing his first goal for the club.

But that seemed to only poke the bear, with Leeds then scoring three goals before half-time.

Wanderers were all at sea defensively, and Emmanuel Agbadou again struggled for Wolves, with many fans calling for him to be dropped going forwards.

Yerson Mosquera and Toti Gomes also had poor games.

It was the kind of performance and result that Molineux officials would have been dreading after handing Pereira a new deal, and Wayne Rooney gave his thoughts on Match of the Day last night.

He said: “I think we’ve seen that contracts don’t mean much nowadays.

“Listen, there will be pressure, of course, they’ve got no points in the first five games and there is clearly a lack of confidence within the team.

“Obviously they lost (Matheus) Cunha, (Jorgen) Strand Larsen has been out injured so they need him back (scoring) quickly.

“And they’ve got quite a few new players there so I think there will be pressure, and I think the fans will force that pressure if they don’t pick up points soon. But yeah, they need to start picking up points and trying to get their season started.”

Wolves in a world of trouble

The performance against Leeds was a disgrace from Wolves.

It was truly alarming to see Wolves go 1-0 up and then offer absolutely nothing. As soon as Leeds got their equaliser, there was almost an inevitable feel that Leeds would go on and win the game.

At the moment, the backline is all over the place, and it is somewhat reminiscent of last season when Wolves were conceding at will under Gary O’Neil.

It is also worrying that David Moller Wolfe didn’t even make the squad, and Jhon Arias, the club’s marquee signing, was only brought on for the closing stages of the game.

This again raises questions over the club’s recruitment in the summer.
