Wolves missed out on signing Viktor Gyokeres in 2023, failing to win the race to sign the Swede from Coventry.
After failing to secure promotion with Coventry in the 2022/23 campaign, the writing was on the wall for the striker’s future.
Wolves were favourites to sign Gyokeres at one point in the 2023 summer transfer window, but it was instead Sporting CP who landed the talisman.
Having scored 54 goals over the 2024/25 season, the reason why Wolves didn’t sign Gyokeres has become even more infuriating, as Jeff Shi being out of the country at the time of interest gave Sporting the advantage.

Vitor Pereira reacts to Viktor Gyokeres Wolves transfer chances
Vitor Pereira has uncovered a strong striker in Jorgen Strand Larsen, but the Norwegian was some distance away from matching Gyokeres’ scoring record last term.
Still, the Old Gold will be happy with how they recovered from interest in the Sweden international, but that hasn’t stopped the West Midlands club from being tied to the 26-year-old.
Having returned to his homeland at the conclusion of the 2024/25 campaign, Pereira could not escape football talk, as he was interviewed by A Bola.
Surprisingly, the Wolves manager was asked to comment on Gyokeres, prompted to answer whether he’d like to have the striker in his squad at Molineux.
“Well, my team is short for that much money, but I think he has space,” Pereira said while laughing.
“He is a player with the profile to play in any team in England.”
Wolves could’ve signed Gyokeres for just £25m in 2023, which even now, would be considered a high fee for one player at Molineux, making the Swede’s £84m price tag entirely out of reach.
Pereira understood such lightheartedly, commenting on the slim budget he has to spend at Wolves this summer.
What Gyokeres has done since Wolves’ interest
In 2023, Wolves’ interest in Gyokeres was fairly understandable, as the 26-year-old finished the season as the second-highest scorer in the Championship.
The 21 goals Gyokeres scored then caused heads to turn, heads that haven’t stopped facing the Swede, who has hit another level at Sporting.
Since signing for the Portuguese champions, the former Wolves target has contributed to an eye-watering 125 goals in 102 appearances.
No player in Europe scored more in their respective domestic league than Gyokeres last term, telling of the heights he’s now hitting.
Pereira knows no path now leads Gyokeres to Wolves, even though there was a chance only two years ago.
