Vitor Pereira just urged Rodrigo Gomes to take inspiration from one surprise Wolves teammate

Wolves supporters are delighted they can watch an exciting, young team hold their own against some of the Premier League’s best, with Rodrigo Gomes representing that area of their squad.

Gary O’Neil signed Gomes from SC Braga in the summer transfer window, offering huge potential and incredible versatility to the Wolves squad.

The Portugal under-21 star is perfect for Vitor Pereira’s system, as he can operate as a wide player in attacking areas or, most predominantly, at wing-back.

While the 21-year-old is mainly utilised from the bench, he’s made a telling impact on several occasions this term, with Gomes scoring a wonderful goal against Leicester City at the end of April.

But, just like many players his age, the youngster has areas of his game where he can improve, and Pereira has urged him to take inspiration from one of his Wolves teammates.

Vitor Pereira wants Rodrigo Gomes to be inspired by Andre

Gomes is developing into a better player every week, and in Wolves’ 1-0 loss to Manchester City, he was tested by one of the Premier League’s quickest wingers, Jeremy Doku.

Pereira has praised him for the energy and speed he possesses, but wants his decision-making to improve, which is something he’s working on.

“He’s fast, he’s committed every time, but we need to control his injury because it’s not finished,” Pereira said via the E&S.

“He needs to improve some important things, especially with the ball and looking for the solutions and it’s something we’re working with him to fix.

“But he’s a player for the future. For now, he’s a player that’s helping us. If it’s five minutes, 10 minutes or 50 minutes it’s the same, he comes with fire every time.

The Wolves manager wants the talented gem to use midfielder Andre as a tool of inspiration, seeing him as someone who adapted his game to flourish in the Premier League.

“When I played against Fluminense, Andre was a passing playmaker,” Pereria added. “Now, he’s found the balance between the confidence to play his game and the physicality the game demands. We need time to adapt.”

Gomes can be Nelson Semedo’s long-term replacement

Pereira accepts that Gomes is one for the future, and that was a view shared by O’Neil during his time at the club.

However, with Nelson Semedo’s contract expiring, Wolves could already have their long-term replacement for the 31-year-old.

Although Semedo is in talks over a new contract, with supporters hoping he stays for a couple more years at least, Pereira at least has someone who can replace him if he does leave.

Gomes has the pace, dribbling and flair to more than fill the void of his attacking output, he just needs to improve his defensive awareness and decision-making, two things that come with age.
