Vitor Pereira gives defiant 15-word answer to Wolves relegation question

Wolves are embroiled in a dogfight at the bottom of the Premier League. The Old Gold have 14 games left to save their season.

Having won just five league games, Wolves sit deep inside the bottom half of the table, separated from 18th-placed Leicester City by just two points.

Wolves’ victory over Aston Villa in last weekend’s Midlands Derby gave the side a major lift, though.

And now preparing for two tough fixtures against Liverpool (Feb 16) and Bournemouth (Feb 22), Vitor Pereira must navigate an incredibly tough period if he is to further boost his side’s chances of retaining their top-flight status.

Vitor Pereira confident Wolves can avoid relegation

Taking over from Gary O’Neil in the middle of December, Pereira joined for Wolves’ Matchday 17 fixture against Leicester City.

The Old Gold were 18th when the 56-year-old took charge, and although they’re only one place better off, the Portuguese boss is doing a good job. There is clear progression in the way the side are playing, and Pereira feels he will be able to keep the side in the Premier League.

“I believe a lot in our work and I believe a lot in our players,” he told Sky Sports.

“Of course we are now facing some problems because the schedule is very difficult. We are facing strong teams and the winter market, every time is difficult to deal with this, but in the end, I feel that the club is a family club.

“Everyday we are together in the same spaces. I believe that this is the spirit that we need to fight in the next month to stay in the Premier League because this is the best league in the world.”

Unless a miracle happens, Southampton, with just nine points, are as good as down. The Saints are very unlikely to be able to turn it around, which means, realistically, there are just two relegation spots available.

Wolves could benefit from Leicester City’s uncertainty

Everton, although in 16th but on 26 points, look a solid bet to beat the drop. Should David Moyes continue to guide the Toffees away from the danger zone, Wolves, Leicester City and Ipswich Town will battle it out for one place.

Ipswich are the favourites, out of the three, to join Southampton, and although very little separates the Foxes and the Old Gold, Pereira’s men will feel they’re best placed to survive.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s future at the King Power is uncertain and has been for several weeks. Aside from beating Spurs, the Foxes have been on a dire run and there is talk the former Manchester United striker could walk away from his position.

Even though this hasn’t happened yet, failure to keep their manager and the core of their squad on the same page could result in Leicester City crumbling at the worst possible time — unless you’re Wolves.
