Vitor Pereira explains Matt Doherty and David Moller Wolfe absences for Wolves vs Leeds

Wolves crashed to yet another defeat in the Premier League on Saturday against Leeds United – and there was no Matt Doherty or David Moller Wolfe in the squad.

Wolves lost 3-1 at Molineux, in what was potentially the worst performance and result of the season so far.

After taking the lead through Ladislav Krejci, Wolves then conceded three goals before half-time, with Leeds standing firm in the second-half.

Wolves tried to apply some pressure in the second-half, after Vitor Pereira made three changes at the break.

But the chances Wolves created were low quality, and there was little danger of a comeback being mounted.

Wolves are in a world of trouble right now, and Pereira admitted after yesterday’s game that he still doesn’t know his best team.

And the manager also shared why Matt Doherty and David Moller Wolfe were not in the squad.

It was another peculiar team selection from Pereira against Leeds.

Jose Sa returned in goal, despite a decent performance last weekend against Newcastle United from Sam Johnstone.

Hugo Bueno, arguably Wolves’ best player this term, was dropped to the bench. And Andre, one of Wolves’ best players on paper, also started on the bench.

Matt Doherty and David Moller Wolfe did not even make the squad, and after the game Pereira suggested this was simply a tactical decision, admitting it was a hard decision to leave out the duo.

He said (via E&S): “You must tell me, if it’s not Doc or Wolfe, tell me two players to stay out.

“This is a very difficult decision for me.

“We have five full-backs to play in the two positions and I must decide if we need Krejci to play in midfield or centre-back.

“I need to decide if we have two centre-backs on the bench or if we go with another forward.

“It’s a very difficult decision but I spoke with them and they need to try to understand that it’s a difficult decision.”

Moller Wolfe omission is especially disappointing

Wolves now have a lot of depth, and that is going to mean we see Pereira make some big calls each week.

Moller Wolfe missing out on this latest squad is certainly disappointing to see. Especially after he actually got an assist when he came on against Everton recently.

The Norway international has been brought in as the replacement for Rayan Ait-Nouri and up to now, he has not really made an impression barring that cameo against Everton.

Now he’s missed a squad, and that will only make fans question the club’s recruitment further.

The omission of Doherty is also interesting.

Pereira has been a big fan of Doherty since he came to the club, and while he is not in good form, he is perhaps one of the only leaders in the squad right now.
