Vitor Pereira and Wolves will be fuming at what the Premier League have just announced

Wolves’ future in the Premier League is hanging in the balance despite the turnaround under new manager Vitor Pereira.

The Old Gold looked doomed to suffer relegation under Gary O’Neil, as the Englishman collected just two wins from his first 16 league matches this term.

Wolves sacked O’Neil in mid-December, replacing him with Vitor Pereira, and the Portuguese boss has masterminded an upturn in form.

A return of three wins and a draw from his first eight league matches has seen the Wanderers escape the bottom three, admittedly sitting just two points above 18th-place Leicester City.

While Wolves are embroiled in a relegation battle with Leicester and other clubs, one rule that has hindered the club over the last few seasons is here to stay.

Premier League to keep PSR rules for next season

As revealed by The Times, the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules are set to remain in place for the next season.

Several clubs have voiced their concerns with PSR and it’s a rule that has hampered Wolves previously, forcing them into selling their best players to avoid a breach.

In the 2023 summer transfer window, Wolves sold Ruben Neves due to PSR along with Matheus Nunes to Manchester City.

Since then, the club have been wary about their spending, with the Wanderers not spending as much compared to their rivals last summer, although that changed in January 2025.

Wolves were the Premier League’s second-highest spenders, behind only Manchester City, as Pereira signed three new players.

However, with PSR to remain in the following campaign, Fosun will be keen to ensure they don’t make significant losses as the maximum amount teams are permitted to lose over three years is £105m.

Matheus Cunha is set to become Wolves’ next big-money sale

Supporters have become increasingly frustrated with Fosun asset-stripping the squad in the past few years, although fans will perhaps have sympathy if Matheus Cunha leaves.

They were able to persuade Cunha to sign a new contract instead of leaving in January, despite half a dozen clubs showing an interest.

Now, a £62.5 million release clause has been inserted in Cunha’s contract, with at least one team likely to trigger it in the summer.

The 25-year-old didn’t have to stay at Wolves beyond January but he loves the club and feels he owes it to them by firing his side to survival.

However, regardless of whether he achieves that aim, the Brazilian is deserving of playing Champions League football, and he may fulfil that dream come the summer.
