Vitor Pereira alerted to potential ‘huge risk’ for Wolves with one upcoming decision, it could ‘upset the group’

Wolves are now into their pre-season and have just played their first training match today against Santa Clara out in Portugal.

Wolves lost 2-1, but it is being suggested that there were plenty of positives to take.

Realistically, results are not too important in pre-season. Especially not in the very first game when everyone has only just come back.

Sasa Kalajdzic was the goalscorer for Wolves, which is fantastic news and hopefully he will be able to kick on.

Liam Keen felt Kalajdzic did relatively well against Santa Clara, suggesting he took his goal ‘really well’.

One thing that Wolves fans had been looking out for in this particular game was who Vitor Pereira would give the captain’s armband to, with Nelson Semedo now a free agent and training alone.

In the end, Toti Gomes and Matt Doherty wore the captain’s armband for Wolves for a half each, suggesting they are the two leading contenders for the role.

Dave Edwards has spoken about the captaincy decision in his latest E&S column, and has urged Pereira not to do one thing regarding his new Wolves skipper.

Toti wore the captain’s armband on his 100th appearance for Wolves, which may well have been an experiment to see how he would do wearing the armband.

Doherty has also been captain several times previously.

The duo look to be the two names in the frame right now after today’s game against Santa Clara, with other potential contenders Emmanuel Agbadou and Joao Gomes both playing.

We will soon find out who will be the next permanent club captain.

It could even potentially be a new signing – but Dave Edwards believes this would not be a good idea at all, pointing to what happened during his own time at the club.

He said: “The captain could come from outside the group. There could be a new signing coming in that could take the armband, but I always feel that could be a huge gamble.

“I have seen it happen a few times in my career, most notably when Roger Johnson came to Wolves and took the captaincy off Karl Henry. He was a big signing, and it really did upset the group.

“Until you work with a player, you don’t always know what their character is going to be like and how they are going to fit in with the group.”

Edwards is right about Wolves captaincy, as he names his own two favourites

Many will agree with Edwards’ point about the Wolves captaincy.

There is just something about bringing someone in and giving them the armband that doesn’t really feel right.

Unless they are a hugely experienced captain already, it ought to be someone who’s been a part of that dressing room for a little while and understands all the players.

It is a tricky decision for Pereira, because there is not really a totally obvious, standout choice. Edwards believes Joao Gomes and Agbadou could be good options.

Doherty is probably a decent choice in terms of him being that experienced head, a great professional and someone everyone respects. But it might not be that he plays every single game.
