Wolves’ losing streak in the Premier League continues after suffering defeat against Manchester City.
Just as Gary O’Neil’s side thought they’d earned a point, John Stones scored in stoppage time to take three points back to Manchester.
It was an agonising way for the game to be won after VAR intervention however, nothing should be taken away from Wolves’ valiant effort.
The Old Gold matched City for large spells of the game, proving that they can put together a strong 90 minutes in what has been a dreadful start to the season.

Mario Lemina makes Team of the Week after Wolves performance vs Man City
It was an unfortunate way for the game to end, as for all of the hosts’ efforts, there was nothing to show for it points-wise.
What is positive is that O’Neil has a better insight into how his team should be lined up, with the formation change working well for Wolves.
Change in shape wasn’t the only notable thing for the manager to consider, as several top performers on the day were those who haven’t consistently featured in the starting XI this term.
For example, Jose Sa was man of the match on the afternoon and centre-back Santi Bueno had an outing to remember however, it was neither of the two who made BBC Sport’s Team of the Week.
Troy Deeney named captain Mario Lemina in midfield of his best XI of match day eight, lauding the Gabon international’s leadership and effort against the champions.
“He was excellent in a really spirited performance against the champions Manchester City. The captain led by example, getting forward and making some great tackles in the heart of midfield.
“His effort and desire should serve the side well as they continue searching for that first win of the campaign.”
Lemina certainly played a captain’s role in midfield against Pep Guardiola’s side, with his display being one of many top performances on the day at Molineux.
Lemina’s game in numbers vs Man City
Deeney’s selection may come as a surprise to some based on the quality that some of Lemina’s teammates produced against the champions.
As mentioned, Sa was influential to Wolves so nearly gaining a point, making a flurry of top saves to keep his side in the game right up to the dying embers.
Nothing should be taken away from Lemina’s display however, as the numbers reinforce just how impactful the 31-year-old was.
As per Sofascore, the captain completed 100% of his long balls, as well as making two interceptions, two tackles and winning three duels.
Perhaps the most prominent part of his performance was the seven clearances he made to keep City away from threatening in the final third, being a rock in central areas when his team needed him most.
For O’Neil, it’s back to the drawing board as Wolves continue their quest for their first win of the Premier League season, with plenty of positives to take despite the recent defeat.
