Toti Gomes admits surprise at being kept around by Wolves

Toti Gomes has admitted he was surprised to be kept in the first-team picture at Wolves after being brought back from Grasshoppers.

The defender returned to Molineux in early January to help provide cover within Bruno Lage’s first-team squad.

Romain Saiss had gone to AFCON with Morocco after the Premier League game with Manchester United.

And so Gomes, who was in his second season on loan with Swiss outfit Grasshoppers, came back to Compton Park to participate in training.

On January 15, Lage threw a curveball by starting Gomes for the first time against Southampton.

The 23-year-old featured in Saiss’ position, and put in an assured display in a 3-1 victory.

He then got further chances against Brentford and then Norwich City in the FA Cup.

Speaking to the Express & Star, Gomes has admitted he did not expect to stay at the club beyond January: “It was a different situation because I was supposed to go back to Switzerland but I came here and gave everything.

“I tried to learn with the guys. The experienced guys, like Coady and all of the players, helped me.

“I was not expecting to stay. But I gave everything of myself and in the end the coach gave me that confidence and I had the chance to play with the team. It was really good.

“I was really surprised to stay here, I was not expecting it.”

Toti Gomes clearly made a big impression on Bruno Lage

Perhaps the plan initially was for Gomes to go back to Grasshoppers.

But he did impress in those three games he played earlier this year. And evidently Lage was pleased with what he saw.

Chances between now and the end of the season could be few and far between for Gomes. Saiss is back now and Willy Boly has also made a couple of appearances.

He will likely spend most of his time with the U23s from here. But if he keeps working hard, maybe Lage will turn to him again before the season is out.
