TalkSPORT pundit ‘not surprised’ by one rumour coming out of Wolves right now

Pundit Tony Cascarino says that he isn’t surprised by one rumour coming out of Wolves at the moment.

Wanderers have enjoyed a fantastic pre-season so far, having won four out of five games.

Gary O’Neil‘s side just beat RB Leipzig convincingly in Miami, with one clip of Rodrigo Gomes’ goal for 3-0 going viral on social media. After that game, Joao Gomes shared the clip on social media, and fired a warning to Wolves‘ Premier League rivals.

Fans are starting to get excited.

Last season there were lots of good signs, but the team fell away at the end due to injuries and a lack of depth, and also some rotten luck.

There is optimism this time around that Wolves can build on last season, and the Molineux faithful believes in O’Neil, whose popularity at the moment is at an all-time high.

He has done terrific work, and the expectation is that he will soon sign a new contract at the club.

And this does not come as a surprise to Tony Cascarino.

O’Neil has the potential to do special things at Molineux.

He has overseen his first ever pre-season as a first-team manager, and the signs are already there that the team will be even more competitive in 2024/25.

There have been some excellent displays so far.

The wins over West Ham United and RB Leipzig were highly impressive, and the fitness of the players is clear.

It has been reported that O’Neil has held talks with Wolves over a new deal. And last week, he said that he did not foresee any problems agreeing an extension.

For Cascarino, this is no surprise – and he actually feels that the FA could come calling regarding the England job following the resignation of Gareth Southgate.

He said on talkSPORT (04/08): “Not surprised, not surprised. Gary has done extremely well, plays a really good attractive style. Still got a sneaky feeling England might be sniffing.

“I don’t know. I have just got a sneaky feeling because he has done worthy enough, hasn’t he, he has done enough there at Wolves to be given a new deal.”

O’Neil deserves new deal

A new contact for O’Neil would be so deserved.

Wolves were not in a good place this time one year ago. Julen Lopetegui had just left the club after growing frustrated with the financial situation, and everything pointed to O’Neil struggling.

But he has overseen a complete culture change at Molineux, and the positive vibes are back.

These players look like they will run through brick walls for him, and it is exciting to think about how far he could take this team if given appropriate backing. So far this summer, he has been backed well.

Reportedly, Wolves are wanting to get him tied down to a new contract before the new season starts, and what a huge boost that would be for everyone involved with the club
