Tommy Doyle could come back into Wolves fold after new Rob Edwards hint

Rob Edwards has finally spoken of Tommy Doyle – and potentially hinted about his involvement next season.

Tommy Doyle’s loan spell at Birmingham City has not forced its way into the conversation through standout performances.

It has been steady, largely unspectacular, and exactly what you would expect from a midfielder operating in a demanding Championship environment.

Doyle’s return to Wolves is thought to be inevitable, with Birmingham’s promotion bid falling short and Doyle himself having not started many games this season.

Ahead of next season, which will more than likely see Wolves play in the Championship, Rob Edwards has talked about Doyle’s future.

The E&S have reported Wolves are assessing Doyle as a potential option for next season.

And in their report they include quotes from Edwards about the player, with the manager dropping a possible hint.

He said: “I know Tommy, I’ve worked with him in my England days with the FA.

“He’s someone that I know pretty well, I know the qualities that he has and I’ve come up against him in the Championship as well and seen how effective he can be at that level.

“But I don’t want to talk too much about the individuals at the moment, especially as he’s got to concentrate on Birmingham right now and what he’s doing.

“But he’s obviously someone I’m very well aware of and know pretty well.”

That familiarity could well be significant.

It seems Edwards is indeed already considering Doyle for next season, and that is a position most returning loanees never reach. They usually have to re-establish themselves, while Doyle is stepping back into a situation where he is already understood.

Doyle a very viable Championship option for Wolves

There is no need to inflate Doyle’s loan spell, because the value lies in the volume of experience he has built.

That he has made close to 100 Championship appearances stands him in excellent stead for playing in the division with Wolves.

Tommy Doyle Championship appearances by club
Cardiff City – 19
Sheffield United – 33
Birmingham City – 34
Total – 86

He has already handled the physical and tactical demands of second tier football, and it could be vital for Wolves to have a player of his experience.

In what is a big boost for Edwards, he does not need to guess whether Doyle can cope with stepping back into the squad.
