Tommy Doyle admits he’s found something ‘a little bit crazy’ about Hwang Hee-chan at Wolves this season

Wolves fans are hoping to see the team make big improvements in 2025 – and for Hwang Hee-chan to rediscover his mojo.

Vitor Pereira has come in and had a really positive effect so far.

After the club finally sacked Gary O’Neil, Pereira has taken seven points from him first nine games in charge.

The team has looked much more organised, and there appears to be a real togetherness on the pitch, and fans are currently feeling optimistic.

The arrival of Pereira appears to have lit a fire beneath Hwang Hee-chan, who now has two goals in his last two games.

For Tommy Doyle, there is no denying how good a player he is.

Hwang was the subject of a transfer offer from Marseille in the summer, but in the end, a move did not materialise.

Wolves were reluctant to let him go, and the South Korea international then struggled.

He just couldn’t make the impact he wanted, and then picked up an injury that put him on the sidelines for a few weeks.

Doyle has admitted he’s found it ‘crazy’ that Hwang had not really been amongst the goals this season for Wolves.

He said (via Wolves official): “Channy’s brilliant. Again, I think it’s about getting the best out of him. He has some amazing qualities, but he needs confidence as well.

“Last season, he scored 12 goals and to score 12 goals and then not be in it as much as he was, is a little bit crazy, but he’s scored two and two now, he will get your goals, as will Jorgen and Guedes can even play in there as well, so we’ve got three strikers there that can play across the front line, because Channy can also play in that 10 position.”

Matheus Cunha has been banned for two games by the FA, so Hwang will likely keep his place in the starting XI.

And Doyle reckons he will now kick on under Pereira. He added: “There are goals up there, so for him, he knows he’s just got to keep working hard every day, and he’ll get his chances under this manager, which is the most important thing.”

Hwang can be key for Wolves in second half of 2024/25

It has been good to see Hwang get back amongst the goals for Wolves since Pereira was appointed.

His poor form at the start of the season was a bit of a mystery, given how well he performed last season. One wonders if the bid from Marseille played on his mind a bit, or perhaps the arrival of Jorgen Strand Larsen had an impact, with Hwang not arriving in the box as much.

But he remains an important player for Hwang, and Wolves will hopefully keep hold of him this month.

Goals – 24
Assists – 7

It was suggested that Hwang has several clubs who want to sign him in 2025, but losing him in January would be a blow.

We saw last term how Wolves suffered with injuries, so it’s important to have options. Pereira said Hwang can score goals out of nothing, so it would be a blow to lose someone with this attribute.
