Thiago Silva gives his honest opinion on Jhon Arias leaving Fluminense for Wolves, ‘thrown down the drain’

After a period of inactivity, Wolves are closing in on their second signing of the summer transfer window.

Jhon Arias will join Wolves after agreeing a £19 million switch to Molineux. The Colombian winger is currently sorting out his visa before a medical takes place next week.

The 27-year-old arrives at Wolves with excitement surrounding his name after starring for Fluminense at the Club World Cup.

Arias is seen as a direct replacement for Matheus Cunha, who completed his move to Manchester United earlier in the transfer window.

So, with supporters pleased about Arias fulfilling his dream of playing in Europe, it is telling that his teammates are annoyed about his departure.

Arias was rated a 6.5/10 on his final game for Fluminense, who were beaten 2-0 by Cruzeiro.

The diminutive attacker was the most threatening of his teammates, doing everything in his power to score or assist in his last match.

Unfortunately, he didn’t end his time at the Brazilian giants on a high, and his departure to Wolves has prompted a strong reaction from former Chelsea defender Thiago Silva.

Silva, who shared the pitch with Arias at Fluminense, said via Lance: “A guy who loves club, loves what he does. He put character first, the love for the fans, especially to play today.

“It’s not easy, with his head there, an interesting contract for him, for the family, being able to get hurt and see everything thrown down the drain.

“We have to value this gesture, and a lot, but it’s a guy we’ll miss. Unfortunately, soccer is like that, I’ve already had my trip to Europe, I know how it is, and we lose a player of this size for us, it’s very delicate.

“However, we understand the player’s side, the dream he has, and you can be sure wherever he is, we will be rooting for him.”

Silva is sad that Arias is leaving the club, but accepts that he has an ambition of playing in the Premier League, something he will fulfil at Wolves.

Arias is finally a Premier League player

Arias will complete his medical next week ahead of signing a contract and being unveiled as Wolves’ second capture of the summer after Fer Lopez.

Supporters are hoping he can become the next successful South American export, with football expert Tim Vickery shocked that Arias didn’t move to the Premier League in 2023.

Arias impressed against Manchester City in the Club World Cup, despite a 4-0 defeat, yet no club were willing to take a gamble on him.

“Fluminense picked him up for nothing in Colombia, he wasn’t particularly rated, and he’s probably been their best player in Brazilian football,” Vickery explained.

“It really surprised me when he didn’t go after, I don’t know if you remember the game against Manchester City at the end of 2023 when City just walked through them and beat them 4-0. But Arias carried the fight, he looked totally at home in that company.”

Wolves host Manchester City on the opening day of the 2025/26 season, and Arias will be hoping to start in attack.
