‘They believe’: What the feeling from the top is about Gary O’Neil so far at Wolves

Gary O’Neil’s position as head coach at Wolves is not under any immediate threat.

It has been a really tough start to the new season for Wanderers.

It’s just one win in six in the Premier League.

And on Tuesday, Wolves went out of the Carabao Cup to Ipswich Town. And it doesn’t get any easier, with Manchester City next up in the Premier League.

While there have been positive signs, Wolves just aren’t getting the result they need right now.

Some supporters are starting to get more vocal about O’Neil.

The 40-year-old went into self-preservation mode after the defeat to Ipswich, and attempted to offer some perspective on the current situation.

There is some pressure there at the moment, but is his job actually in danger? Not according to Express & Star journalist Liam Keen, who shared the current feeling about the head coach after the game…

Some supporters are simply not convinced by O’Neil.

But those people will have to put their faith in him because he’s likely not going anywhere anytime particularly soon.

Keen said: “I don’t think there’s going to be any news or movement on Gary O’Neil. Sources and people we speak to are giving us the indication that Wolves are sticking by Gary O’Neil.

“They believe he’s doing the right things on and off the pitch. To get Wolves in the position they need to be. And they think results are going to come. But they’re very strong on him staying. We’re being told it’s very strong at the moment, that they’re sticking by him.”

O’Neil has backing, but it’s a results business

For now, it looks as though O’Neil will get some time to try and get Wolves where they need to be.

But everyone knows that football is a results business.

Potentially this stance could change fairly quickly if Wolves go on a losing run.

If that does happen, and the team don’t really show positive signs in those defeats, then O’Neil will be in trouble.

Hopefully, the 40-year-old is able to turn things around, but these are definitely concerning times at the moment.
