Matheus Cunha’s time at Wolves was certainly anything but boring.
Signed in January 2023 on the watch of Julen Lopetegui, the Brazilian got off to a slow start at Molineux, before springing into life in the 2023/24 season under Gary O’Neil.
Matheus Cunha quickly became Wolves’ talisman, and his form continued in 2024/25 even as Wolves struggled as a collective.
But midway through last season, there was constant speculation about his future at the club.
Wolves moved to try and squash all the speculation in the form of a new deal for Cunha, which he signed – although it included a £62.5 million release clause.
Then, in the summer just gone, Manchester United met that release clause, and Cunha was on his way.
In a new interview done whilst on duty with Brazil, Cunha was full of praise for Wolves and the connection he felt he’d built with the fans.
But for some supporters today on social media, there is no love lost.
Wolves fans are not having new praise from Matheus Cunha
Speaking about his time at Wolves, Cunha said: “I was very happy at Wolves. The moment I got there right after I didn’t go to the World Cup, and the club was what I needed to remember how big I got within the possibilities, how affectionate the club was with me.
“Helping in the best way was very important, they also helped me and I was able to give back. Within records and goals, what made me most proud was to return the affection.”
Some nice words at first glance. But some Wolves fans believe Cunha is being a little disingenuous given some of his behaviour in the final months of his spell at Molineux.
@Markysix: “Helping as much as I could…’ as in getting senselessly sent off twice that could have relegated us. Legend in his own lunchtime.”
@David64440867: “Loved him at Wolves but his comments in the last weeks at the club left a bitter taste!”
@1madchef: “So I threw my toys out of the pram and cried disrespected everyone and forced a move 🤔🙄🤡”
@HardlyWorking18: “Funny how they start fondly remembering their old club when they flop at their new one.”
Cunha could get rough ride on Molineux return
Some of Cunha’s behaviour at Wolves towards the end was certainly questionable.
The interview he did about moving on to bigger things – while Wolves were fighting against relegation at the time – rubbed people up the wrong way.
There was then the post on Instagram from Cunha about following his dreams, which he quickly deleted.

For a lot of Wolves fans, all the talk surrounding Cunha became too much and it was actually something of a relief when he left.
Cunha is set to return to Molineux on December 8 when Wolves and Manchester United face off in the Premier League – and it could be an uncomfortable experience for the attacker.
Dave Edwards has previously warned Cunha that he could get booed at Molineux, and there is definitely a chance many will be doing that.
