Theo Walcott’s theory may perfectly explain why Wolves were much improved against Arsenal

Wolves came so close to taking a point from Arsenal at the weekend, and Theo Walcott believes one factor aided Rob Edwards’ side.

The Old Gold were moments away from holding the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium, but fell right at the death when Yerson Mosquera headed into his own net.

The equaliser from Tolu Arokodare sent the travelling away fans wild, and it surely pointed to a share of the spoils.

Wolves fans, was the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal the hardest loss to stomach so far this season? 🤔

But lax defending from Wolves proved costly, and the club remain stuck on two points – and Rob Edwards is still winless.

But it was a spirited display from the visitors, who would have been deserving of a point.

And Theo Walcott has suggested there was one factor that Wolves may have found helpful against Arsenal.

To say that the Molineux faithful is angry right now is an understatement.

Fosun’s management of the club has resulted in the mess we see now, and recently we saw fans protest against the owners.

The players have also come in for criticism from the fans at times. But undoubtedly, it is the owners who are receiving most of the fury.

As a result, the atmosphere at many games this season at Molineux just hasn’t been very nice, which is completely understandable.

Wolves have lost every home game in the league so far, and Theo Walcott reckons the pressure of playing at home means the Old Gold may prefer games away from Molineux.

He said in a new video on The Overlap US YouTube channel: “I do feel when a team has a new manager and they get desperate in some sense, ultimately you just have to get together as a team and think ‘right guys, we’ve got nothing to lose in this game, let’s just really work for each other’.

Put yourself in Rob Edwards’ shoes. How do you lift the Wolves players’ spirits after losing in the manner they did vs Arsenal?

“I think the pressure playing away from home probably helps these teams that are in a relegation fight as well. I think the pressure of the fans can really take its toll on some guys. Me, I’ve been part of that at Southampton as well.

“When you’re in a relegation battle it’s never sometimes nice playing at home. It’s such a cliche, but you need that extra man, you really do.”

Walcott has a point, Molineux cannot be nice for the Wolves players

It is an interesting theory and there is every chance that a lot of those players currently hate stepping out at Molineux.

The anger is mainly directed towards Fosun and hopefully the players do realise that. However, fans have at times been critical of the players when they have played poorly.

Perhaps that was due to there being zero expectations that Wolves could get anything from the game.

But potentially as well, the lack of an angry fanbase may have just liberated them slightly.

Wolves return to Molineux this weekend to face Brentford, but hopefully Edwards will be telling the players to focus on their game, and trying to repeat the performance level shown against Arsenal.
