The Wolves stat that’ll trouble Vitor Pereira as Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri exits badly felt

Wolves have endured a very tough start to the season and are still winless in the Premier League – and one statistic that has emerged will deeply concern Vitor Pereira.

After seven games, Wanderers have collected just two points.

Granted, Wolves have improved in recent weeks, and those two points really ought to have been six given the team were minutes away from wins against Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton before conceding.

But two points is the reality, and Vitor Pereira must instigate a turnaround and quickly.

Pereira has promised Wolves fans they will soon be proud of the team again, and the manager is confident that things are going in the right direction.

But there are still a lot of issues for him to fix – and one statistic really lays one of those issues bare.

Much has been made of Wolves’ defending this season.

Certainly, the first four games saw the Wolves’ backline all at sea, with the likes of Emmanuel Agbadou and Toti Gomes calamitous at times.

Pereira has since made some tweaks though, changing to a back four and deploying Santiago Bueno and Ladislav Krejci, which is a partnership that is starting to blossom.

Wolves have looked a lot more solid recently, and now it seems the biggest issue is at the other end of the pitch.

The xG Philosophy have produced a statistic that makes for grim reading for Wolves fans.

And that is that Wolves currently have the worst attack of all Premier League clubs, with the team amassing an xG of just 5.27. This is lower than Burnley (5.57) and Nottingham Forest (5.92).

Wolves xG stat reflects poorly on attackers and suggests Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri are badly missed

For Wolves to have the lowest xG of any Premier League side after seven games is a real concern.

It was perhaps to be expected that the xG would be somewhat low after the club lost the likes of Matheus Cunha, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Pablo Sarabia.

Cunha and Ait-Nouri were especially dangerous for Wolves in and around the final third, and this data would strongly suggest that those two in particular are being missed.

This should be a concern to Pereira, who must quickly find a way of getting Wolves to become more of a threat again.

Encouragingly, Pereira has managed to shore up the defence in a fairly short space of time.

That will leave fans optimistic that he can also find a solution to the attacking woes.

But there is only so much he can do, of course. The likes of Jorgen Strand Larsen, Tolu Arokodare, Jhon Arias and Hwang Hee-chan will all need to step up.

One man who certainly can say he’s doing his bit in an attacking sense though is Hugo Bueno.

Bueno is being let down by his Wolves teammates at the moment as he has no assists to his name, despite creating 10 chances, and having 13 successful open play crosses.
