The underdog statistic that could provide Wolves with much-needed belief vs Arsenal

There will not be many out there expecting Wolves to get a result against Arsenal, but it is not entirely out of the question.

Saturday presents a real David vs Goliath story.

The Wanderers are tipped to become one of the worst sides in Premier League history, while the Gunners look set to win their first Premier League title since 2004.

Rob Edwards will know the task ahead is one of the bigger tests this season, and the Wolves head coach could hurt Arsenal using one partnership.

However, the home side offer immense quality in their ranks, and it will take each player in the Old Gold’s starting XI performing at 120% in order to cause an upset.

And history suggests it is possible.

Five players have played for both Wolves and Arsenal since the introduction of the Premier League.

Wolves have a history of causing upsets against Premier League leaders

Over the history of the Premier League, there have been 42 matches between the league leader, and the bottom-placed side.

Of course, as expected, the pendulum swings the way of the table toppers, who have won 30 of those games and drawn seven.

This means on four occasions, the worst side in the Premier League has beaten the best. And Wolves take up two of those times.

Finish this sentence: When Wolves play Arsenal, the one thing Rob Edwards must do is ________.

We'll start: Show bravery and try to get at a potentially makeshift Arsenal defence!

In 2004, Wolves shocked Manchester United with a 1-0 win and then seven years later followed it up with another victory against the Red Devils in February 2011 in a 2-1 win.

While it does not happen often, the Old Gold have proven themselves capable of unexpected results such as those times.

It may not be much, but it could provide just a glimmer of hope for a game that the Wanderers are wholly expected to lose.

Wolves are Arsenal’s favourite opponents

While that stat does perhaps provide just an ounce of optimism, this one will certainly bring perspective back down to Earth.

Wolves have been Arsenal’s favourite opposition in recent years, as Arsenal have the longest winning streak against them of any Premier League side.

Arsenal have won their last eight Premier League games against Wolves, and this season they will be looking to match the last time they went on such a streak.

From 2010 to 2019, the Gunners had a 10-match win streak against Burnley.

While one stat lifts you up, Wolves find a way to bring you back down, but miracles can happen.
