The three things Rob Edwards has been challenging his Wolves players to improve

It’s two defeats in his first two games for Rob Edwards at Wolves, but there are signs of improvement under the new head coach.

Wolves lost 1-0 against Aston Villa on Sunday, and there were several moments the Old Gold came close to scoring.

Wolves were genuinely unlucky. But unfortunately, they were made to pay for a lack of ruthlessness.

But fans were buoyed by Wolves’ display against Villa, and the hope now is that it will be third time lucky for Edwards against Nottingham Forest tomorrow night.

Wolves, of course, are still winless this season in the Premier League and have not won in the competition since April.

Edwards needs to turn things around quickly – and Sam Johnstone has told fans what he has been drumming into them.

Wolves are in a world of trouble and there is no overstating how big a job Edwards has on his hands.

Wolves are confident that Edwards will be able to unite the club and are hopeful that he can keep the Old Gold in the Premier League.

But if he’s unable to do so, then Wolves do also feel that Edwards is the right man for the long term.

But for the moment the focus is on improving this current crop of players – and Johnstone has revealed Edwards has been pleading for them to improve in three areas.

He said (as quoted by E&S): “We are in a difficult place and we can’t accept little things which were being swept under the carpet and end up becoming bigger things.

“He (Edwards) is on the lads for standards, mentality and defensively.

“We also have to be on each other. It is not personal when you are asking your teammate to do something.”

Former Old Gold defender Lee Naylor also suggested recently that the mentality of the Wolves squad needed to improve.

Johnstone verdict on Edwards is positive

Johnstone has been quite vocal in recent weeks, which is good to see.

Last week, Johnstone spoke about putting things right that had been swept under the carpet, and he has again alluded to all not being well before Edwards’ arrival with these latest comments.

Edwards challenging the players on standards and mentality is really interesting, and perhaps doesn’t reflect all that well on Vitor Pereira.

Hopefully, he will get through to the players on these things and we will eventually start to see the Old Gold build some momentum.

There is a lack of quality right now, so Edwards has to ensure that things like effort, standards, mentality and professionalism are the best they can possibly be.
